I had about 40K in stock market investments at the time of this, but no other money available...none. I would often go into the weekend short because I didn't want to sell any stock to live on.
So, Sunday comes around and I have ZERO dollars. Not a penny. And I am telling you that I have zero food in the fridge or cupboards. But what was worse was that I didn't have any soft drinks, and I was getting a headache for lack of caffeine.
The problem is making it until Monday so I can sell some stock and transfer to account. All other options you can dream of, for various reasons, could not be attempted (like writing check at grocery store, etc.). I was officially without access to cash.
Here is what I did. I had less than a quarter of a tank of gas, so I could drive somewhere and back, but that was about it. I drove about 20 minutes away to a record store that also bought CD's. I'm not a big collector of music, though I love music, but I had about 5-6 automatic winners in my car at the time. Stuff like Bob Marley, Notorious BIG, Elton John, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson. So, I knew that I was essentially a cinch to get something, even if only a few dollars.
When I got there I decided I really didn't want to part with my best stuff, so I took the 3rd string into the store, plus a few decent ones. It was kind of humiliating, as there was a decent line of about 8 people, and many had big boxes of stuff, and here I am scrapping around for a few bucks. For some reason, it felt more desperate than it really was.
As I waited I could watch the workers and how they dealt with the people. You could tell that one of them was more ruthless and negative and would be condescending while talking about worthless, scratches, whatever. I hoped I didn't get this person.
Of course I did, and I then went down in flames. I think I got $2 for a few of my CD's, and rejected on the rest. This isn't enough to eat with, let alone get loaded up on Caffeine. I went back to the car and got a few of the money makers that I didn't want to part with and went back to the store.
I get near the front again, and am hoping that I don't get the same person, and I am sweating it a bit, but something worse happens. He sees that I am in line again and mentions that I was just there. He says it in a way that suggests that I am attempting to take the same CD's in the hopes of getting another worker who might give me a few bucks instead of denying me because of the condition.
I sensed what was developing so I quickly explained what I did, and got to the front of the line, felt humiliated again, but did get another $3, and got the hell out of there wit the CASE $5. I was relieved to be out from the embarrassment, but also feeling like I robbed a bank, as I was just giddy that I could get to the store, get some food, and get some caffeine. But to accomplish all of the above, I still needed to maneuver.
I get to the grocery store (big chain) and start walking the aisles. Now, for sure, I need caffeine, so I was able to get a nice big bottle of my favorite diet soda/pop for 99 cents. Now, because it was early in the day, I was going to need two meals to really get through comfortably. So, I got a pack of Rice A Roni for $2. I have now spent $3 of the $5 that I have. But there is a problem. You must have butter to be able to cook the Rice a Roni. Now, butter is pretty expensive, so I was pretty much dead in the store, but I quickly thought of a plan.
I knew that there was a Kentucky Fried Chicken right down the street. They sold very small sandwiches for $1 each. I could go through the drive through and order two of them....that would use up the final $2 and be my first meal of the day. But I still needed butter for the Rice A Roni, for my meal later, right?
So, from the psychological safety of my car, I ordered two chicken whatever for $1 each at KFC. I said nothing else. I get to the window, and as the person is just about to hand me my food I say: could ya throw a few sticks of butter in there....I like to butter the bread. It was classic. It went smooth as could be, and the worker, who likely made $7 an hour, had no idea that the person in the drive through in the somewhat new SUV was more desperate than her, at least on that day.
I have a million more like that, but this one involved so many different locations, and brought out so many different emotions, that I will always remember it, and the memories are good.
