So I was heads up yesterday at my first table in the $5k shootout tournament against Phil Tom, father to none other than Absolute Poker's founder Scott Tom.

I would not have known until he asked me if I played online and then asked me if I knew Absolute Poker. I said yeah at which point he said his son founded it. He went on to mention that the whole scandal was all AJ Green's brainwork (apparently he is some kind of computer whiz) and that he's never liked AJ Green since he met him. I didn't ask many more questions because I was trying to focus on beating him, which I unfortunately didn't achieve.

As it turns out, he won his shootout table today as well and is now at the final table tomorrow.

While we were heads up, I had a run of 5 or 6 hands that I won in a row where I made a couple nice calls against him. Then this:

Phil Tom: "Wow, nice call. Can you see my hole cards?"

I smiled.

Phil Tom limped from the small blind/button and Richard Kirsch checked his option. The flop came {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}. Tom checked, Kirsch bet 20,000, Tom minimum-reraised to 40,000, and Kirsch pushed the rest of his chips in the middle, about 65,000 total.

Tom, with over 500,000 chips, only had to commit a small amount to make the call. But he didn't act right away. A minute passed. Then two. Then seven. That's right, seven.

Finally Tom said "Well, what are you going to do?" "The action is on you," replied Kirsch. "Oh!" said Tom, "I call."

Kirsch {9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Tom {J-Spades}{9-Clubs}

The turn was the {10-Hearts} and the river the {6-Hearts}, and Tom took the pot. Tom advances to tomorrow's final table.
