A lot of the difference is also down to the houses being generally crappier, though. If you are for example living in LV you really don't need any effort on heating and proper insulation that cost ****tons in Finland.
Also americans mostly care about outward appearances (in housing as well as other things) so you don't really need to spend money on building properly, just make it extravagant enough and put some fake roman pillars and kitchy chandeliers and your dream house is done. There's no need for expensive planning, quality materials and professional workforce, just put a group of mexican illegal workers on the job, the whole thing is more like building a sandcastle than building a real house.
