So at first I decided not to post the EV line for 2 reasons... 1) as I mentioned, I think all-in EV is way overrated and 2) I've played on sites like Cake and Bodog which screw with the EV line so I'm pretty sure it's not actually accurate. With that said, I don't want people thinking I'm a complete and total luckbox, when in reality I'm only a moderate luckbox so here ya go:

I do think my EV may be a bit overstated, so I'm probably a bit over all-in EV over this sample, but there's no way to know, and that only represents a small portion of the "luck" aspect of poker anyway.

Think of some people who play golf like 4 times a week who shell out big bucks for a hobby, this way a hobby that even breaks even is actually +EV (well that is how I think of it anyway!)

If you don't mind me asking, I was wondering what exactly your job is. I am imaging that I will be in a similar situation after college, I am studying engineering at the moment and is something that I would really like to do. Now for what its worth, I do not make anywhere near 3X even starting salary of most engineering jobs, but even if I did I don't think I would want my main income to be poker.

Best of luck in the future OP with poker and with business school hopefully you hit another hot streak man.
Thanks for the kind words. Definitely sound like we have a similar outlook on things. I work for a Management Consulting firm, basically getting hired by large businesses to help them solve their business problems. It's a pretty cool gig where I've gotten to work on projects in a lot of different industries right out of college which I've loved, and I really like the people I work with which is so important. I also think the job has helped my poker game a lot... we do a decent amount of analysis using Microsoft Excel, and I've been able to apply that to poker, making spreadsheets to help figure out if my opponent is 4-betting X% of hands in a certain spot and is calling it off with JJ+, AK, what hands should I be looking to get it in with, etc. Believe it or not I also talked about poker in some of my business school essays too, though I was VERY careful how I talked about it (playing up the math/analysis aspect, and downplaying the luck/gambling involved).

Inspirational, OP would appear to be a winner on many more levels than just poker.

WP dude!

There should be a perma link to this in the Beginners Questions forum for all the "I want to learn to play pokerz and quit my job" threads.

Great post.

I think this post does a lot to the poker community.

It tells us that it is possible to beat online games and it will attract people (fish) to the games. Thanks bro.

Im starting something like this but from scratch (started FR NL2) and Im at NL10 rigth now (2 months of grind) using stop losses, Bankroll managment and going down when in need to address leaks and test changes.

What I miss from your post is the bankroll managment you used, stop losses, ...etc for every stake you played.

It would be very useful.

Congrats mate and keep the grind

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Good question on BRM and stop losses... In terms of bankroll management, I think I started out with $1K at 25NL, moved up to 50NL when I had $2K, and moved up to 100NL when I had $4K so 40 buyins per level at stakes 100NL or less. If I ever dropped below 30 buyins for a level I would move back down (so if I moved from 25NL to 50NL when I hit $2K, the minute I dipped below $1.5K I'd drop back to 25NL).

Above that I definitely would recommend at least 50 buyins though, and I like to keep around 50-70 just for my personal sanity, though I'm probably more conservative than most (dealing with a 25 buyin downswing at 2/4 is a LOT easier for me when I see the account balance drop from $30K to $20K instead of $20K to $10K... I like having that buffer).

I may have been better off being more aggressive, moving up when I hit 25 buyins and dropping back down when I hit 20, but I prefer to try to stay at a level for good when I move up rather than hopping back and forth a bunch. Everyone's got there own way of doing this, doesn't matter how you manage your bankroll as long as you're using a system that works for you and will prevent you from going broke.

On stop losses, I don't do as good a job as I should. I tried to follow a 5-buyin per session, 10 buyin per day stoploss -- so if I hit -5 buyins, I stop and take at least a 30 minute break... if I come back and hit -10 buyins on the day, I'm done until tomorrow. Didn't always follow this and I probably cost myself a bunch of money by not sticking to it. It's so hard to stop mid-session when you are down, but it's so worthwhile... losing definitely affects us more than we think, and it's real easy to be subconciously steaming and all the sudden you're check calling 3 streets with TP in a stupid spot where you're always beat and spewing off an extra buyin. Hope that helps a little bit. Good luck!

Haha, so I'm hoping that by taking the rest of June off and trying to do like 2-3 good deeds per day, I will build up enough good karma to counteract the effects of posting the graph. Figure that'll at least be good enough for a break even July? We shall see... probably screwed though

It helps a lot.

I think Im more conservative on "session/daily" stop losses but more aggressive with BRM on the micros. Im waiting to get to 1K to move to NL25 (atm I have half of that in winnings - cashed out the initial $50 of investment) cause I am expecting my edge to be considerably lower on higher stakes (hence the variance beeing bigger).

Thanks for your answer again. When I feel in doubt I will come to read this post again
