Moving this to LC instead of threadjacking pohuist's thread:

Yeah, I have Settlers as well as some expansions (6player, travel edition, cardgame). I've also plays a bunch of the variations (seafarers, cities and knights, nuremberg, some historical scenario, card game...). Maybe played the game like 30-40 times. Played a donkament actually...

I used to play a ton of boardgames, cardgames, and wargames before I had kids. Then I switched over to poker because you could play as little/long as you wanted, there was always a game going, and it was pretty convenient. Making some extra cash is always nice too.

Tyler, I might be one of the few that did worse in 60 during lapc.

oh man. youre looking at this the wrong way. having kids means you always got someone to play a game with. plus its probably really good for developing their little minds.

Oh yeah, if you like Settlers, you should check out Puerto Rico. Better game IMO and much more stuff to think about.
03-13-2010 , 01:40 AM
I checked out Pawn Stars at the suggestion of some people in this thread. Hahaha, that show is like a mash-up between Antiques Roadshow and American Chopper.

Have any of you ever received w/e 'reward' is promised when playing on an edu table at FT?

LOL, just logged into FTP and it told me I have 1 day left to accept my $100 bonus offer. Time to start 1-table grinding online.

I am having a Jersey Shore theme party in the Atlanta area on April 3st. All 2p2ers are obv welcome. PM for details. There will be hawt Georgia girls. That shoud be incentive enough. If you think Georgia girls arent hawt then you might be ghey. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

ouch.

Settlers is kind of lame. It's imbalanced in favor of the cards you can buy (it's been a while, I forget the names). Puerto Rico is definitely better. I love board games but haven't played any in a while. Most of them don't hold up balance-wise to rigorous analysis.

My very first game of Axis and Allies I figured out the game-breaking strategy (I think high level players rebalance the stock rules somehow but I forget how).

The blood preesure is an arterial measurement. I realize nobody cares, but thought I could at least provide some knowledge on this, since it's clear I don't have much to offer on the pokers. If you don't believe me check with leo or surf doc.

well theres 4 basic strategies as i see it when youre placing your settlements:

1) you go for spots where you can collect (brick and wood) to focus on building roads and settlements quickly.

2) you go for spots where you can collect (ore and wheat) to focus on building cities quickly.

3) you go for spots with (sheep and wheat) to focus on getting development cards (what youre talking about). if you have to choose, sheep and wheat is better than sheep and ore since you need sheep and wheat to build settlements up anyways.

4) you go for a spot where you can get 3 of the same resource and a port for that resource to trade those resources at 2-1 instead of 4-1.

you have to master all 4 of these strategies to figure out which ones best to follow given the way the board is laid out and what other players have picked and what players left to act are likely to pick and what gives you the most combinations on the dice roll.

i played an awful lot of this game if anyones wondering. like 200 or so games online and each game takes like 45mins. yes i was that addicted and all of this was like in a 2month span

picking your initial settlements kind of reminds me of drafting in MTG. you try to figure out what colors the guy on your right and left are going for to know what colors are likely to get passed to you and go into the colors theyre not going into to get the best selection and to deprive them of bombs in their colors.

You'll probably want to do more than one, because you only get 30 days to clear it and FT bonuses take a lot of play to clear.

If anyone is thinking about/planning to move to San Diego/Oceanside area let me know. I have a room available for rent in our house. It's just me and gf in a 3br/2.5ba so you'll have your own bathroom. We are both poker players and pretty quiet when we're at home since we hide in our room all the time so it will be like you have the house to yourself. Big house, big yard. Treadmill upstairs right next to your room (was the 3rd bedroom), hot tub and fancy bbq grill outside, pool table in the house. 2 car garage (that is full of crap so only 1 car can fit, but we don't use it anyway). Nice power recliners downstairs to go with our once nice but now ****ed up 60 inch tv that will probably get replaced soon. Quiet/safe neighborhood, about 10 minutes away from Ocean's 11. Maybe 80 minutes from Commerce. We have 2 dogs, one pretty well trained middle aged one that never barks, one puppy that is learning fast from the other one to not be annoying and is in puppy obedience class. Prefer no more animals around the house, but anything is possible. We get maid service every 4-5 weeks, it's on a schedule, I forget. We get the same person every time, she is good. AT&T Uverse cable in both bedrooms, treadmill room and downstairs, internet obv wireless and works good throughout house.

PM me if interested, too lazy to walk upstairs and see what the furniture situation is like in the room, I think the draws and chests may have been reclaimed by their owners after we took care of them forever, but there should be a queen bed up there still. I have a limited time offer of letting any new tenant see the last standing Christmas tree in the United States, it might not last much longer!

I'm pretty sure this is the nut strategy, but you get ore too for cities. My friends and I made cards cost 2 sheep instead of 1 and that made it more balanced. When I played online I just went for cards (and cities) whenever it was remotely reasonable to do so and won a high % of games. Basically wood and brick are crap.

The other problem with the game is trading. If you play with trading with my friends the game becomes an enormous balance of power exercise.... where every trade is analyzed by everyone and lobbied against if it doesn't even out the balance of power. So if you get a lucky draw no one will ever trade with you and everyone else will trade madly until they beat you or come close.

it all depends. if u get crappy numbers like 2 3 4 11 for ore and stuff like 5 6 8 9 for brick and wood, youre obviously gonna go for brick and wood. when it comes to trading, people typically dont trade with the guy thats leading.

u figure olive oil would be in the aisle with olives and vinegar. of course not. its in another aisle.

u know how like you see in movies people throwing molotov cocktails thru store windows.

i have a really hard time believing its that easy.

i picture it bouncing off and maybe leaving a crack.

like arent most windows doublepaned?

i guess i can see store windows being singlepaned so people walking by on the street can see in better for whats on display but for security reasons doublepaned windows make more sense and its not like you can not see through doublepaned windows.

My 2 favorite movie 'impossibilities' are driving fast thru China Town and always getting a parking spot right in front of your destination.

Don't think those people take notes.
