Over pair on 4 straight board. Over pair on 4 straight board.

The BB just sat down and posted his BB. He is 60 ish. No other reads. The SB is a very loose passive reg.

I open 8s8c in the LJ, folded to the blinds who call.

7s4c3d...It's checked to me, I bet, SB calls, BB raises, I 3 bet, SB folds and the BB calls.

7s4c3d5h...BB checks.

What's the plan the rest of this hand?

You can bet/fold

I don't three-bet the flop against an unknown 60ish villain, and as played I check behind on the turn. I think his range is very strong when he check-raises the flop. His worst hand here should be a pair of 7s, and his best hand is uncapped.

Bet/fold with a draw to a high straight? I would check back and reevaluate river.

I would 3bet the flop in pretty much any midstakes game unless I knew the villain really well. There are certain guys who will only raise 7x or better on this flop, but I see so many players - even elderly white guys - checkraise any pair plus gutter on this type of texture, particularly since this board misses every single high card hand you might raise with before the flop.

Turn is a stupid card. Heads up I think I just check back and make sure one bet goes in on the river.

All those guys bet all those hands on many many turns vs call.

That’s true. Are you suggesting delaying until the turn or calling down and betting if checked to? I think the first line is way too ambitious but calling down and betting if checked to is not awful and is one of the two defensible ways of playing this hand after the flop c/r.

I like the 3bet on the flop and would probably continue betting on the turn, although I think checking has merit given that there are a ton of hands that beat us but we want to get to showdown somehow.

I think there's a disconnect between willingness to raise the flop and unwillingness to delay to *some* turns. Like, if we don't feel comfortable with the idea of raising any J turn, how robust is our flop equity estimate?

Getting heads up is so often a good thing, not discounting it. But does doing so here help us play better across more turns and rivers than if we had called? I don't see how but maybe I'm missing something.
