I Should Be Flogged with a Coat -4

V1 is good player. Bracelet guy from before. He is good at folding, which is not a great quality for limit hold 'em but he knows when he is beat.

V1 opens LJ, HJ calls, I three bet on the button with AQ They both call

Flop is 7TJ

V1 donks, HJ folds, I call.

Turn is K

V1 checks, I bet, V1 check raises. I call planning on raising the river.

River is 6 and I chicken out.

Don’t chicken out. You block the flush. You said he opens too widely. There are so many hands that you beat that villain, as described, can play this way. 89s, KK, KJ, KT, JJ, TT, JT and maybe even Q9s.

Re: I Should Be Flogged with a Coat -4

Aren't KcQc and 8c9c the only hands he can reasonably show up with here that can beat you? And one of those is impossible?

And the other (8c9c) is unlikely given the flop donk imo.

His most likely hands here are KT and KJ. I would simply 3-bet the turn. If you think he'll fold to a turn 3-bet while he has outs, he'll certainly fold to a river raise when he has no outs.

I would guess rfv = raise for value. If you aren't going to raise the turn then the river is a must raise here. I would be more worried if the board had paired than when the third club came.

Yeah river is poorly played. He is way more likely to have a hand like KJ or 77 or 98s here than a flush. And even if he is a hero folder, there's way more hands that can pay you off than hands you value town yourself with.

I play bad so am probably calling river though although I imagine it is slam dunk raise for value on river if OnTheRail15 says it is.

3 betting turn makes the river easier to play IMHO

Two more questions:

1. What do we do if the river is the 7d?

2. What do we do if the river is the 7c?

I really like all these threads. Nice work, ninefingershuffle. Think you beat value hands and you should get some more value.

I don't think this changes much - bet if checked to and raise if he bets again. Not too worried about the flush draw coming in after his turn play.

The real question is what does a solid TAG donk here on the flop given his relative position and the cold caller between. If he had just a pair he would likely c/r to protect, so his hand looks like it is either very strong (e.g. 89, 10J, or a set), or a big draw that doesn't mind building the pot with one between he and the raiser (e.g. KQ, Ac7c, 6c7c, 7c8c). After the turn it becomes much more likely that he does not have one of the flush draw hands since he has very little fold equity vs a preflop 3b'er. Because of this, I think raise/fold the river would be correct if the 7 pairs and he bets again.

Re: I Should Be Flogged with a Coat -4

I wanted to wait for river because I thought his turn value range was wide and he could fold a lot.

OK, but one of the ways people turn MUBSY is by putting their opponent on whatever range justifies passivity.

So, OK, he's got a wide turn value range that includes some b/f's. That's a valid read.

But then, what's his range for betting this river? Is he checking back everything but boats and bluffs? Is he bet-folding everything that isn't a boat?

I mean, you may actually be right here. But we have to figure out what he does with each part of his range to be sure.
