20-40. Cap is five bets.

Couple of limps, a raise, and several cold callers including the button and SB. I call in the BB with 8h5h. Villain in this hand is the button. I've got about 20 hours with him and I've never sent him raise preflop. He cold calls some and he limps some, including hand like AQs and JJ. He is very old.

7 handed to the flop.

Flop is 9h6h3s.

Checks to the button/villain who bets, SB calls, I call, 5 others call.

6 to the turn

Turn is 7c

SB checks, I donk, one caller, button calls, SB calls.

River is 4s

SB now donks, I raise, dude folds, button three bets, SB folds (he always has a 5 here), and I guess this is an easy 4 bet?

4 bet. You have the second nuts. If he has T8 oh well.

If he has T8 I can't imagine him not raising the turn. Definitely 4 betting.

Yeah after I finished typing the post I realized how easy the 4 bet was and almost deleted it. I just couldn’t figure out what value hand he had here that wants to three bet (and also bet the flop) unless maybe exactly 55 (with one five dead).

Can he have 65s?

Agree with four-betting the river. FWIW, I also think it is seriously worth considering leading the flop. You do not want it to get checked around, and check-raising a late position bettor doesn't seem great here (seems you agree based on your action), but leading, getting some calls, and then having someone raise is great.

I used to do this kind of thing often, but lately whenever I have tried it seems that the in-between players fold and then the strong player raises.
Could be just in my game though.

Yeah, that'll happen sometimes. But the PFR will also have a lot of unpaired hands that are unlikely to raise, so it sometimes just goes fold fold fold call, which is fine, too. And where it goes fold fold fold raise, you probably weren't going to get a ton of overcalls anyway had you check/called.

i think postflop play has improved a bit recently, i dont think its coincidence that this play doesn't work as much anymore.

when a solid player donks in this position its clearly to trap other players and when not closing the action vs the pfr although odds are attractive calling with weak draws is a dicey proposition.

People getting better at postflop play includes learning to check back more frequently, especially in multiway pots. If the PFR is going to check back closer to optimally, we cannot just check by default OOP.

Probably a good flop bet if we are also going to donk sets and 96

Just call the 3b unless he clueless. He knows people have a 5. He knows you can have T8,85. Small % he wants to guarantee riv isn't pair/flush.
