There are two risks here.
One is that the turn checks through and you lose a bet you could have made.
The other is that you bet out and get raised and end up either paying off a better hand or making an attempted exploitative fold that could turn out to be wrong.
So you have to consider both risks in deciding what to do.
EDIT: there's actually a third risk too. Your opponent may make an exploitative fold against you when he or she might have been willing to continue betting if checked to.
