Re: 2020 HI content

Idk why, but this reminds of when I used to trade baseball cards w the neighborhood kids. I used to look forward to seeing the monthly issue of Beckett's. I had memorized a lot of the prices for Topps, Fleer, Upper Deck stuff and my father knew a lot about this market. Enough to drive me back to some kid's house and make me give back a $5 card that I'd traded for 2 cards, each worth about a quarter.

The coolest piece of memorabilia we had was a ball autographed by Cy Young, when he threw out the first pitch at the Little League World Series in the mid-50's. This was before ESPN covered the Series and before you could bet on whether the next pitch would be a ball or strike. A photo of him in the paper, stealing home on a passed ball for the winning run in a prelim game, was a big deal, according to his friends. It was probably a better look than when he got the heave-ho for kicking up dirt from the infield on to the umpire, after getting caught stealing 2nd base in another prelim game lol

I'd do almost anything to get that ball back. The $150 he got for it - before that market collapsed - doesn't really scratch the surface of it's value

Back in the day, I was a walking encyclopedia of baseball stats. But at this point, I doubt I could name a player from every team, despite the fact that baseball is the easiest sport to handicap (I think?)

Derailing thread hard but hope everyone stay safe if they started playing live again

Including professional athletes (ex: MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, UFC, etc).

This applies to most 20/40 games I've played last 2-3 years. However, I have leak to value bet light when checked to

How often do we feel the need as "advanced players" to put in extra action where it isn't warranted? Sometimes our opponents ask us to bluff them out of pots, to b/f, or make some other play. OTOH, most of the time, isn't betting when you have it and checking when you don't the best play?

I've been playing a lot of .5/1 online poker, and the good players there have a lot of FPS in them. Think about a 5/10 or 10/20 live game that is slightly TAG if you don't play online. The things that make me shake my head from the decent-ish guys in no particular order:

1) They bet/raise ties, 100%. Ax on a KK442 board is giving extra action. They'll pay off a re-raise.
2) They'll semi-bluff (value raise?) showdown hands. Guy is in a 4 way pot as the PFR with JJ. He leads the flop and loses one. BB donks and EP folds on the turn on a T72K board, he's raising it most of the time. Maybe there is a better example, but I constantly think "why didn't he just call down?"
3) They love to raise impossible river bluffs. I open QQ and get HU with the BB. He'll call down on a K942K board and he'll c/r the river. I'd call A-high here too, and win more than my fair share with both. Oddly, if he had the king he'd...
4) They love to donk. I know that live players (likely due to more MW pots) do this a lot. However, if you take my hand from 3 and donk the K and c/r your bluffs, even an idiot hand reader can play pretty well against you.

Just makes me think, ABC poker is the new tricky play. Add in a touch of LAG and you'll have them shaking their heads.

Re: 2020 HI content

I am trying to imagine what it must be like to try to keep a 4-handed LHE table going at Talking Stick. 3-4 handed poker basically becomes a matter of "How long can I last without going to the bathroom?" in many cases. And even then, I am usually playing with people who enjoy shorthanded poker.

It could be a lot of fun if at least one spewy LAG who loves to terrorize live nits shows up. Battling with regs can be fun too... well, at least until you are stuck 5+ racks and feel like crying.

I know almost everyone prefers to keep quiet nowadays with LHE being somewhat endangered in many cities. But I would love to hear a war story or two from those who have played in or witnessed these games.

Fwiw, they are running 9-handed poker games with no dividers and no masks here in the Austin clubs for the past couple weeks. It is all no-limit and mostly with bomb pots. Gambling addiction knows no bounds!

Re: 2020 HI content

Before Corona, I had been idly thinking about maybe heading to Austin or San Antonio for a month to check out the poker club scene. (Yeah, I know, all NLHE and PLO.) The clubs are coming back right now, but it would take a lot for me to even consider playing there right now. Quite apart from how bad I think live poker is in a pandemic, I think I would want to rent a car for a month and drive there and back -- I would need the car anyway -- because I wouldn't want to get on a commercial airliner any time soon.

Re: 2020 HI content

As it turns out, CrazyLond had already written up a great post in the Talking Stick thread about his experience playing the first night there:

https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/s...postcount=6315

It sounds like the staff is being super cool. I was so excited to see the first mid-stakes LHE games running since March, but probably won't be rushing in.

Alan, I suffer from extreme incompetence when it comes to big bet games. People always ask me about the games since they have a reputation for being ridic soft, but I have spent maybe 5 hours total in them. 1/2 usually plays quite a bit higher since lots of people straddle. And this may be normal live, but a typical open raise size is like $15 at 1/2 even when nobody straddles. Being an online guy, I was used to open raising for 2.5x to steal the blinds. But I found out the hard way that tossing out a $5 chip without saying anything counts as an open limp when the dealer quickly made change and tossed me $3 back!

I have gotten so addicted to live poker (huge poser... yes, I know) that I might actually give them another try. If you have a clue in live NL, you would be a beast in those games. People look at me like I am an idiot when I tell them I have hardly played in the Austin scene.

Pope, good to see that you are still around! I do love live poker nowadays, but I will likely wait until it is safe enough to play 9-handed without a mask before returning. My vision is terrible and I can't wear contacts, so masks fog the hell out of my glasses.

Tw, it is also great to see you around! I miss the days when you, me, daiquiri, La Peste, and merryber were crushing 2/4-3/6 on Stars and polluting these forums regularly. In hindsight, we essentially had a 24/7 ATM machine available to us in our own homes. Good times!

Thank you very much Unguarded as your strategy posts and life posts are better than 99% of what's available

OT:
Has anyone recently played San Diego live poker vs Sean Snyder?

Ex). 100/200 LHE Dealer's Choice, 25/25 or 25/50 NL both sounded epic

PS: Pot Limit Double Draw Archie & NL single draw baducey should be a main game in a nonstandard mix game in my biased opinion

Brought to my attention that I am mentioned here, so came in to say hi! I am currently live in Las Vegas, but not planning on going to play live anytime soon. TW - long time no see/hear. Hope life is treating you well ❤
Been away from poker for a long time now, and the times you talked about, Unguarded, seems so far away....

If your glasses get fogged while you are wearing your mask, it is not doing its job.

Re: 2020 HI content

Maka, I was away from poker for awhile and have mostly played live poker or big bet online. I was so out of the loop that I was recommending Deuces Cracked vids when the site isn't even around anymore lol.

Merry, I will never forget you introducing me to the concept of cats using toilets like humans! Oh, and your PTR was pretty sick too

Alan, I am not sure what that means. Air is going to escape above or below the mask. I would need to be wearing a sealed mask with an oxygen tank to keep that from happening. Sealing the mask at the top so all the air escapes downward is prolly the best bet, but I haven't tried it yet since I never wear it for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Re: 2020 HI content

For me cycling, a tight and well fitting mask really reduces the fogging. It took a couple of mask designs, and I now have one that works really well.

Not being in the early "let's see how many out-of-state folks have the disease" experiment, might be a pretty good idea. Maybe other folks figuring out how to dodge infection is the plan?
