windows update causing wifi trouble windows update causing wifi trouble

I recently got a pretty major windows update and since then have been encountering all sorts of trouble with my internet connection. I get lag that comes ever 10 seconds or so and occasionally loses connection all together. When I look in the task manager > performance > wifi the graph seems to be showing the same thing, that data sent/ received keeps coming in bunches and dropping frequently to zero. I assume this is probably a driver issue? I think windows might have updated the driver to one that doesn't work. Is there anyway to stop windows updating the drivers? If I reinstall the old ones I'm assuming windows will just update them again. Can anyone offer me any help or suggestions.

Many thanks.

Check device manager to see if the driver version changed. If so, uninstall and put the old driver back in place, keep it on hand in case you ever need to do that again.

The driver version has indeed changed, so I reverted back to the previous Windows build and made a copy of the drivers it was using then. I then let Windows update once more.

I am not sure how to replace the new drivers. When I go to device manage and click update drivers > browse my computer for driver software > let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. I then select the folder with old drivers in. Windows then say 'Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed...' So it won't install the older drivers.

I have also tried navigating to the drivers location and just replacing the file manually but that just caused my wifi adapter to stop working completely.

Do you have any more advice you can offer me?

Many thanks

I tried installing the drivers from the adapters website which may have helped in that the wifi hasnt dropped out yet, however I'm still getting pretty bad internet lag every 5 or 10seconds. It's not noticeable if just surfing the internet but makes playing poker a nightmare. Bit like an elastic band where nothing happens for a few seconds then it snaps back and everything happens all at once. I'm beginning to think it might not be just the wifi adapter drivers and something else is the problem but have no idea how to identify it or fix it.

I'm getting a similar problem. It's not as frequent as every 10 seconds, but I notice it when I'm playing Overwatch. I'll get a lag where everyone but me freezes for a couple seconds, then I snap back to normal. It might only be once every few minutes, but it's annoying.

I'm not sure if corresponds to the Windows update, but it cropped up very recently. I'll check the drivers.

Drivers were updated, so that wasn't the issue. I even installed a new wifi adapter (realized I had a newer one in another PC that didn't need it) and that didn't do anything. I also turned off some QoS option for the adapter.

It's not a serious problem, but it's there. Like I said, it's most noticeable when I play Overwatch. I typically have a ping in the 30's, but one every couple minutes or so, it spikes to the 70's to 80's. That's not a terrible ping, but it is the quick spike that screws things up.

I'm going to see if the wifi router (Archer C8) needs a firmware update or something. I've also tried another cable modem, but that didn't do anything.

If you want consistent network performance use an ethernet cable. If that's impossible 5ghz tends to have far better speeds than 2.4.

On 2.4 gigahertz my wifi adapter can see dozens of signals which causes interference and slower speeds.

Yes, I've been using 5ghz.

Of course, calling the router company was of no use. They want me to connect my PC directly to the modem. If I could do that easily, I wouldn't be on wifi.

It's got to be the Windows 10 creators update that's causing the problem. Online multiplayer games are almost unplayable now.

Besides ensuring you have the correct wifi driver, the only thing I can suggest is a replacement.

This works far better than the wifi card in my Dell laptop. Maybe you could try it, and return it, if it doesn't help.

Nah. I've tried two different wifi adapters with updated drivers, two different cable modems, and updated the firmware on my router. I had no problems until a week or two ago, which I believe coincided with the Windows 10 creators update.

At some point, I'll lug the PC upstairs and connect it directly to the modem and then the router to see if I get the same problem.

I guess I could try a new router, but that's a pricey fix when I just bought it this year.

If you find a solution please post it, some what like you, I have tried 3 adapters and 2 different routers but still have a lag problem and no idea how to fix it.

I did find a solution. Looks like Windows is having my PC/wifi adapter search for available networks every couple minutes, which was causing lag.

I couldn't find any way to turn that functionality off, but did an app called WLAN Optimizer that does specifically that.

"Streaming mode" is unchecked by default, but I needed to turn it on for the app to do the trick. Haven't noticed any lag since having the app running.

i am having an issue with lag playing games and when watching video on my tv, on my monitor it is fine, but i have an ethernet cable. this happend to me last windows update and then one day everything returned to normal. I have no idea what causes this but it is very annoying. I didnt play any games over a month the last time because the lag was so bad.

tried rolling back drivers. have searched for answeres. none found. even sent a support ticket last time to gigabyte because i thought it was a problem with my video card.

The windows update for me caused what appeared to be a screen resolution change. Computer is connected to a TV. The taskbar and icons don't fit. I tried different sizes and updated the AMD drivers. Still no change. Thoughts?

I had the same issue with a recent windows update. For some reason the higher resolution setting was removed during the update. I couldn't be bothered to research the issue at the time, so I just rolled back the to previous graphics driver version.
