Win7: Laptop to New Monitor via HDMI giving BSOD

Monitor: Hanns-G 281
Laptop: Sony Vaio VGN-AR870
OS: Win7 Home Premium
I've connected this laptop to various HDMI sources before such as TV's and audio receivers with no problems.
So I unboxed the monitor and followed the given instructions in hooking it up. Then I install the drivers and everything went fine so I connected the hdmi input to the computer and it gave me a quick flash of the BSOD then restarted. Every time a restart was attempted, it would give the BSOD just before loading the Windows logon page. If I unplug the HDMI/monitor, I can restart without problems.
So, I plugged the monitor in using dsub to VGA and it works fine.
Help please? Tried googling a bit but nothing has helped.

Update your video drivers from nvidia.com to the latest ones and try again.

monitor drivers are usually uneeded, you can try uninstalling them, or reinstalling them.
And Freakin gives good advice, is this the first time you have used this resolution?
