Hi, this is the machine that im running atm

I want to upgrade the ram to 64gb, right now just maxing out 32gb every time.

Basically if i want my machine to have 64gb RAM i will have to upgrade the motherboard and then buy more RAM right?

Is there anything else I would need to upgrade? the CPU is fine right?

and any recs on what hardware you would buy?

Have you looked at a site like Crucial.com that sells memory and has tools to help figure out how much memory your system will take?

no i didn't know that existed.

I just checked and said i can just buy 16gb sticks and put them in with this motherboard, wtf. for some reason i thought that my motherboard could only take stick of 8gb

Sorry for this, mod can delete.

Don't worry about it, someone else may have the same kind of question in the future. It's been a while since I upgraded any memory, but Crucial was always the company I used and I never had any problems with it.

Check on Crucial, buy on ebay.

Since you asked this, I'd ask you why you think you need more RAM. I ask because most people who come here thinking they need more RAM don't - and indeed will never need it. Are you running a bunch of VMs or something?

There might be other upgrades you can make, if you're looking to burn money. If you're not going to use the extra 32Gb of RAM at all (which will be the case for many many users) it might actually make more sense just to replace your existing 32Gb with 32Gb of faster RAM. This is only an incremental boost but would be better than nothing.

Other than that I'd be installing a bigger SSD, but who knows how much of the existing one you're using.

yea I am running some VM's atm and want to run some more, also running some of the china apps.

That SSD is full (223gb) but the 2nd one has like 600gb left.

and yea whenever i open task manager and look at cpu and memory performance, the memory is always at like 30 - 31gb

Yeah, if you have VMs it's a different story.

Running with >10% free space on your SSD should speed that disk up for you a bit, though.

The other drive isn't an SSD, right? It's just a standard HDD. Point I was making was that having more stuff on fast drives is generally a good thing.

Check MB bios versions just to be sure. Should be fine though if the DIMM slots are available.

Hi so I ended up buying more ram and everything was great.

Now i decided to increase my production even more and i added more games and now my CPU is maxing out, yesterday the PC reset and i notice when im running full capacity the temperature hitting 85c quite fast.

I am running Intel Core i7 7700 @ 3.6ghz, i think this is already decent? - uses 4 cores 8 threads.
Mother board MSI z270 gaming M3

Should I just buy i9 for like $1k+ and splurge on w/e motherboard needed to support it?

just to add - the VM's use up most of the CPU% and they are already on the lowest settings for processer settings, the apps don't use that much at all and i mostly want to add apps...how much of an upgrade do i really need?

That temperature is probably pretty standard for a 7700 under heavy load with the stock cooler. If your concern is the temperature, then you could add an aftermarket cooler.

Otherwise, it's not clear why you're wanting to upgrade? If you just want more processing power then sure, buying a new mobo and CPU will do that. Whether you need to is a different question.

Basically, you had a freeway that was full of cars so you added more lanes then when you saw how good things were going added more cars to fill up the additional lanes.

ok yea i want more lanes again lolz.

last time i had my CPU running at or around 100%, i came home and my room smelt like electrical fire, computer wouldn't start...opened it up and had liquid all over the motherboard.

also atm unable to run all my apps/vms because hits 100% too soon and don't really wanna push it.

What should i upgrade?

Smells like a new PC.

Yeah, you might google around for ideas on machines built specifically to run VMs on for some ideas, I didn't see anything on my first search for it but there must be something out there. This also assumes you have to run all those VMs locally and run any of them on AWS or Azure, which may be another option depending on what's on them and what your budget is.

What liquid do you think was all over the motherboard? Does the machine have liquid cooling? If so has it failed? PCs don't sweat.

Hi, i have another Question.

Right now with poker, I am running PT4, all mainstream sites like stars/party/888, chrome with youtube music playing. Then I have 6 emulators for China apps, and 1 virtual machine @ 1 processer w 2 cores/processor. The VM not connecting to any server or w/e, it just runs locally off my own machine.

I am hitting CPU utilization 100% if I add 1 more VM or 1 more emulator. Temperature also hitting close to 100C.

My Q is If i want to add 6+ more emulators AND 4 more VM's. What are the important CPU specs that I need? Is there even a CPU/MOBO combination on the market to handle this?

Lol, i don't know. Maybe something melted?

This was over 1 year ago now, but i remember when we opened the case there was dark patches all over the mobo

What cooling does your machine have?

Other than "not enough", which is almost certainly part of the answer. And how much dust / gunk / unspecified PC sweat is there in the fans that you do have?

Seriously, though, smell of electrical fire plus unidentified dark patches on mobo would have led me to a different course than playing on for a year and adding considerably more load to the system...

I didnt play on it for a year.

I bought basically a whole new machine after that happened.

It sounds like you're trying to use a bunch of consumer desktop equipment to run some sort of server farm.

I don't understand why you're trying to run a bunch of virtual machines on a PC at the same time as you're playing poker on it (although, as someone who used to work in detecting bots in online poker, I can hazard a guess). Why not just offload all the VMs into a proper server or equivalent? Why does all this need to happen on the same device?
upgrading RAM Q Quote
03-21-2019 , 03:34 PM
Lol im not running bots or using bot assist while playing.

I dont know anything about running vms from a server. But honestly if i just have to pay like 1000 dollar and can run all this locally i would do it vs learn about some new tech and waste time setting it up, guessing running from a server isnt free either?

Anyways i was thinking about just spewing and get i99940 14 cores/28 thread cpu...would this be able to hand those requirements or you think will max out?

a) I don't know exactly how heavy your load will be, without you being clearer about what you're actually trying to do.

b) I find it difficult to believe that you can do this cheaper on your home PC equipment. Even if it were possible, I imagine the cheapest way would be to buy multiple low-end devices, rather than spending $1,500+ on the CPU alone. Here's the story of someone else running a server with their own equipment: https://blog.codinghorror.com/the-cl...lses-computer/

c) I don't understand why all the VMs need to be in the same physical computer. If you can have them on different devices, I imagine you can get much better performance per dollar with cheaper motherboards, cheaper CPUs, etc.

Post 17 explains the workload. Playing poker though vms and emulators.

Not interested about b and c.
