My current desktop (HP Pavillion 570-p081ns DT PC SP) has the following specs:
  • HP 82F2 (U3E1) Motherboard
  • Intel® Core™ i7-7700 3.6-4.2 GHz (running @ 3.6 GHz)
  • ATI Radeon RX 460 2GB
  • 12 GB RAM

When I bought this pre-assembled system almost 2y ago, I was aware that the graphics card was the weakest link.

Looking to upgrade more or less now. The motherboard has a PCI-E 16x slot, the graphics card is PCI-E 8x. I don't know what this means exactly, but it seems I can put something better in.

Looking for something at least twice as fast for gaming etc that fits in the midi tower. Any of you have a recommendation?

Thanks

Can you get your power supply wattage and check for available PCI-E power cables? That is likely to be your limiting factor in card selection. It looks like your current card is slot powered. If your PSU doesn't have any PCI-E 6 or 8 pin connectors, you'll be limited to 75w and below cards.

looks like that thing's rocking a 180w uATX psu
that will need to go, not sure about the form factor? mby they're referring to the the mobo as in micro ATX and the psu is standard ATX?

Assuming ionutd's specs are correct, GTX 1650 is probably about as fast as you can go. For $150 in the US, probably a reasonable upgrade and will boost gaming a good bit over 460. No need for PSU upgrade, this is the same draw as the 460.

I'm just ok to replace graphics card. I wasn't looking to also replace power supply

ok, this is what you can expect with the 1650

if you decide to change the psu as well, you can get a significantly better gpu, your cpu can handle it and frankly the 1650 is not much of an upgrade

Honestly, I draw the opposite conclusion from that video. The 1650 isn't a world beater by any stretch of the imagination, but it moves frame rates into the solidly playable and smooth range in a lot of games. Also note that the 460 in the video benchmarks was a 4GB card while Gabe's is a 2GB card. Modern games will use that extra framebuffer even at 1080p. The site I pulled up with a quick and dirty web search shows an average of 87% improvement. https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compar...460/4039vs3641 For $150 its likely to keep the system playing mainstream games at decent detail until the whole PC is replaced.

@Gabe: I did a little more digging to see if AMD had a good, modern option in this bracket and they don't at this time. The 5500xt is a 130w card and wouldn't work in your system. Also note that NVIDIA has done a semi-refresh this generation with 20xx and 16xx "Super" cards. You want a plain 1650, not a 1650 Super. The 1650 Super is a good bit faster but draws 100w and would require a power connector your system is unlikely to have.

the way I see it, it looks like it dips quite often below 60 fps with the settings tested and that causes stutters. prob ok on low settings tho.

imo it's better value for money to get a new 50-70$ psu and then you can find better deals in the 150-200$ range from amd gpus and this way performance/$ looks better to me and the whole idea of an upgrade is more appealing, get proper 1080p performance. the 1650 feels more like a patch than an upgrade. these are regularly put in 3rd/4th gen pre-builts that lack a dedicated gpu, but op has a half decent one in already and a cpu that doesn't bottleneck better cards.

even an rx 580 is 100-125$ and that wipes the floor with the 1650

Interesting stuff guys

What you are telling me is that the 2016 graphics card I bought in 2018 isn't THAT terrible, because to get a 2x quicker card I need to buy a 2019 card. I was kind of expecting to be able to find that on the second hand market.

I will have a look at my PSU, because it seems to be the limiting feature for this upgrade

So I opened it up and ionutd was spot on with the 180W PSU

It seems quite easy to get a second hand PSU for dirt cheap, so what should I look for? I must fit and it must have the right connectors for the gpu and the gpu itself must also fit

take a look / pic of the psu, if it's standard ATX form factor, it's easily replaceable
if it's not, then you got a problem, I know small form factor pre-builts used to come with weird shaped proprietary psus, but yours looks like a regular mid tower

does your system look like the one in this video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD2T_kTOQPI

if so, that's good news, it's replaceable. I'd go with something like

https://www.microcenter.com/product/...r-power-supply
https://www.microcenter.com/product/...-graphics-card

this should be all the gpu power for 1080p you need

btw you got a regular 60hz monitor?

you beat me to it

I wouldn't get a sh psu, not really worth the hassle imo, brand new one for 50$ is fine from a reputable brand

sh gpu, sure, I'm sure there are some great deals out there for some gtx 1060/1070 or rx 580/590

if you want to buy new, check out

Certainly not going to buy a new gpu. It isn't for me, just for my kids playing Fortnite. I don't want to spoil them too much. Just looking to upgrade as cheaply as possible and bring cpu and gpu to the same approximate power level.

Without taking out the PSU, I estimated it to be 140x140x85mm. That's a standard size, right

Thanks a lot for your input

Is Fortnite really that graphically intensive that a couple year old card won't run it fine?

Yeah, would def be looking at replacing the PSU if you're going down the upgrade route, I'm a fan of Corsair myself and the lower end of their range is usually good value for money and last you multiple builds, mine's still going strong after 9 years

yep that's a standard psu
well then check out facebook marketplace / ebay / craigslist for deals on gpus
if nothing comes up, get the gtx 1650 like headtrauma said and call it a day, fortnite is not a demanding game
thought you had more demanding games in mind, these "esports" titles will run fine on lower end hardware

This seems another piece of relevant information, because I indeed have a standard (cheapish) 50-60 Hz monitor with DVI and VGA input, not with HDMI

there are cables for both hdmi and display port to dvi
vga you don't want to use

never even seen a psu with 2 fans lol. dunno why it would need 2 but hey..
I'd rather not advise you to buy a piece of crap psu and then read a post about your house burnt to ashes so I shan't

ugh

It is a mini graphics card that I need. That will reduce my options, I suppose. The length of the card can be 16cm maximum.
Upgrading graphics card Quote
05-06-2020 , 02:57 AM
160 max? that blows
ye it's obvious from the pic you posted, I failed to notice that
damn pre-builts
I'd say even the 1 fan new cards are 170mm+ in length
there may be ways around this if you get creative by using a pcie riser, or there might not be enough space inside your case
idk about this one, let us know if you find any 160mm gpus

This one will probably work, right?

It ought to fit and I don't need to replace psu
