I wouldn't be surprised to see significant React uptake mostly due to HN spam, facebook backing, and React native as a solution for mobile. Most of the startups I see lately are built on React vs Angular.
My exp is only w/ Angular, but wouldn't the complexity of any component determine its implementation difficulty, and not the framework?

Going back to the 'like' widget, to make it a custom directive for re-use in any details page, it'd be maybe 20 lines? (i assume just to POST/DELETE)

Unfortunately, the narrative makes perfect sense because 99% of sites are obnoxiously slow. If web houses have access to page load data, why aren't they using it? I also doubt that Amazon is using Chrome tools for profiling. Unfortunately, it does seem like a special thing, even to me. I wouldn't hold a journalist up to the standard of knowing that page load is easily available for everyone, but it is just that developers aren't making it a high priority for whatever reason. The writer only knows that page load is slow, and a fast site is a unique and pleasant item to use.

I don't really doubt that Amazon treats its engineers like garbage. They are well-known to treat their warehouse workers like garbage.

They also treat their third-party sellers like trash. The back end (Seller Central) is slow and completely useless. The flat files are a joke. The rules, policies, and how they are arbitrarily enforced are so complicated and convoluted that it took me, at minimum, 2 months to train someone up on the quagmire, and that was if they were smart.

An email from Amazon looks like this:

We have shut down this listing (ASIN XYZ) for a policy violation. If you would like to have your selling privileges restored for this listing, you must contact us with your plan describing why it happened and explain how you will prevent it from happening in the future.

Wow thanks. I have no clue why the listing was shut down or why we aren't allowed to sell our own product anymore. Don't even get me started on their atrocious customer service. Absolutely impossible to describe.

@Dave - I really have my doubts that Amazon treats its top engineers like crap tbh. Talent and "cultural fit" are probably the key factors in getting recognized as a highly valued contributer would be my best guess.

I'm sure they don't treat top talent that way, but rank and file?

Also not like ****. You don't build a highly successful tech company while completely ****ting on all of your developers with the current tech job market.

We were talking a bit about this at lunch and a co-worker who's worked for Amazon and for another big name company said that there was very little meaningful difference in culture and management. Amazon just doesn't do the free lunch type perks but pays the same in an area with a lower cost of living.

On a related note any company not offering free drinks/snacks/meals is missing out on mad value. It's always entertaining to me to see guys making 100-200k a year make a huge deal out of something that would cost them like 2-4 grand.

You better believe it is a big deal.

Getting sick of having to reach into my pocket or push a button for anything that should be just handed to me.

When I walk into a store, I also want to just grab something and walk out. We are approaching 2016 and I don't know why this isn't a reality yet. Lol

I bet that guy takes PTO for a cold.

Then you have construction workers who get paid $12 / hour, have to bring their own jug of bottled water every morning, and if they get their arm chopped off, they better learn how to pee with their weak hand quick, because the company won't pay them anything unless they can pass a long series of drug tests.

It is scientific fact that free lunch tastes better than lunch you have to pay for.

A construction worker has to be willing to travel; if they want to be paid where the demand is located.

We don't really have to do that in our field. The perks...

The place I used to work at, the execs would get catered lunches when they have clients visit. If we were lucky, we would get an email that there are leftovers in the break room.

My co-worker always felt that this was degrading.

i want to punch people who come to work sick. If it's in any way communicable, stay the **** home. It's worse for the company for you to come in and get others sick so that they have to miss work than if you just stay your sniffling ass the hell home and don't infect others.

Yep.

This is also why unlimited sick time is significantly better policy than unlimited vacation. Set the precedent that you dont want sick people to come in.

But but but that's how you build your immune system! Once I start working again, if ever, I am going to get sick a lot from seeing people!

If you have no paid sick time and you are living paycheck to paycheck, you work when you are sick, and yes, 20 other coworkers are going to come in sick as well.

We used to make jokes about who patient zero was this time.

I don't see how its degrading if the lunches are only associated with client visits. I prefer paying for my own lunch than getting a free one where I have to talk to clients.

100MB files are pretty hard to email! many servers will limit attachment size way below that. Maybe an FTP server? no idea really, interested to hear suggestions

Google Drive?

Yeah, I'd suggest an FTP as well.

edit: No I wouldn't. I thought he said he was sending, not receiving. Think it'd be a PITA to have everyone setup FileZilla or whatever.

New semester: 3 programming classes (one is the highest level they offer), plus a database class that's supposed to be one of the hardest courses the program has.

I created a profile on angel.co and browsed around, but didn't express any interest. Then one startup reached out to me and asked to talk. I initially told them I'm too junior for them, but he insisted we talk anyways. We talked last week and I had a technical interview with one of team members today.

I think I did well Well at least for my 1st ever technical interview. Had 2 questions, was able to solve the first one with relative ease I think. Only mistake I did was I did was:
if (number % 5) instead of if (number % 5 == 0).
Which the interviewer pointed out to me.

Second question about explaining MVC with a screenshot of an app (iOS) and how I would architecture that.

We talked salary and equity briefly and that was it.
