yeah photoshop CC1 on my 2010 machine with 8gb ram and SSD opens virtually instantly and has no slowdowns while doing anything normal.

7 years old is pretty old. I don't follow Windows hardware much but I'd start by looking at the processor and memory on the machine and see how big a gap there with what's in today's machines.

Ok looks like I have an i7 @2.67 Ghz, 4gb ram with windows vista ultimate (32 bit). It's 6 years old. I found the thread I made in the computer forum about it: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/48...system-432959/ But I took a screenshot of the build (FU imageshack).

I could upgrade the OS, Ram and get an SSD. Or try to upgrade the CPU as well. Or get a new motherboard and everything. The latter probably makes the most sense.

You probably can't easily upgrade mobo/CPU individually, both or neither.

I'd do what others have said, buy an SSD and fresh install Win 8. If it's not good enough, look at other options.

Your bottleneck is your RAM and SSD would help a lot too. But spend the $25 to get another 4gb for sure.

Yeah an i7 is pretty solid. Format + SSD, gogogo.

Get yourself a brand new system. You want upgrade from 32 bits to 64 bits. Yes SSD, yes 8GB, yes i7. The hardware forum has a lot of good posts and posters.

Windows kernel takes half the virtual address space in a 32 bit system. You want a 4 core processor with lots of cache memory.

I also have to upgrade the OS to 64bit. I actually have a high-RPM non-SSD drive. But it's loud and takes a little bit to "wake up". Very annoying.

Extra RAM will help in the OS not having to swap process data and executable code to disk as much (how much this happens depends) and of course an SSD really makes a difference with swapping.

Again, where you can really help your system avoid memory bottlenecks is buy a processor with a lot of cache memory.

He has an i7, don't think he needs to buy another new laptop. New SSD and ram should suffice.

I feel like starting a thread on the worst software you've ever used, but I feel like my OP would be /end thread, /winnar, or whatever. I'm seriously trying to figure out how to start invoicing this company for all the wasted time.

After pondering the above conversation a bit, I realize that I'm coming from an extreme place, and I'll readily acknowledge that I'm likely wrong on quite a bit because it is possible that I'm blinded and excessively frustrated with the crap the current company is using.

Sometimes I beg the stars that I'm wrong.

The point of a thread like that wouldn't be to brag that you've had the worst software experience of anyone here or at least it shouldn't be imo.

Worst software you've ever used would be Adobe anything /thread.

Unless we're talking random small distribution software in which case I guess consult thedailywtf.com.

Anyone else saw this on HN?

I'm skeptical, because the world of software development is very large and it seems presumptuous for the founders, who may be very good, but are probably only experts in some narrow vertical, to think that they can judge every programmer's skill using some game.

Photoshop is one of the best pieces of software ever made.

iTunes is one of the worst.

Just finished a 9-week Ruby on Rails bootcamp in Vancouver (CodeCore)... it was awesome. If anyone has questions on the format or the specific course I'd be happy to answer any.

What we covered:
- Ruby on Rails
- HTML/CSS
- JS/jQuery
- Git
- PSQL
- React

Both of my nominations Microsoft SSRS and Rogers cable guide were horrendous by any reasonable standard.

There were a lot of stupid nominations though:

iTunes on Windows is horrible. I almost never use iTunes on my mac, but I'm pretty sure its better than Windows but not really what I'd call good.
