I have an awesome head cold and diarrhea and even my gf doesn't want hang with me for NYE. So I am refactoring all the things in our node framework. It's pretty awesome to have these two weeks when basically no one's doing anything. Nothing in the programming world gives me a charge like deleting chunks of code.

Yo dawg, you might have the flu. Colds don't often come with diarrhea. If you got a temperature, may be time to see a doctor.

It doesn't feel flu-ey, just stuffy head. The diarrhea may have been some bad med reaction. I will keep the thread updated

Btw both of my npm/github repos are up and running! But I still need to do the Readme file and write a bunch of tests. Shocking that a developer would put those off until last.

Yes I know I should have written the tests first. But I'm putting that in unicorn territory until I see one person ever actually do it on an industrial-sized app/site.

Anyway at this point I basically have our entire site as built-in integration tests of the framework. When the framework breaks, it mostly breaks hard, fast and obvious.

Mostly.

Would any web dev people have any interest in starting a small non-profit org and accompanying donations website?

It would be related to the recent transgender tragedy and basically be a humorous way to funnel donations into actual lgbtq charities

Transgendered minor forced to go to some crackpot gay conversion camp by her parents. Story ends in suicide, as it tragically does so often in these cases

In the olden days, said person would have probably experienced Electroconvulsive therapy and maybe would be walking around today but with brain damage.

The Medical field seems to have waken up but peoples beliefs have not.

Sex change operations have existed since the 30s. The medical profession is about 100 years ahead of religion on this one.

Is there a legit link between computer programming or similar jobs/hobbies and transsexualism? There are a number of semi-famous early PC game designers who were born male and eventually became women (check YouTube for Matt Chat with Rebecca "Burger" Heineman, she's super entertaining. There are at least 2 other Matt Chat interviews with transgender women). Computer type I knew in real life is now a woman as well.

Dunno BJ, and I don't mean to politard up this thread, was just curious if anyone would be interested. Mostly, I'd need help setting up some sort of humble bundle-esque donation system where people could either pick where donations went or just auto-evenly distribute. I think I could probably handle the design of the site itself. Maybe. Or just use wordpress or something.

And, y'know, knowing how to legally set up a not-for-profit would be good, too.

Man it is hard to work when the whole office is on vacation.

Apparently the buzz and random interruptions ate what keep me sane.

I'm the complete opposite. I get so much stuff done when nobody else is working.

I deleted a github repo to rename it and lost like 3 months full of contribution pips I'll never get another job again.

You deleted both the repo on GitHub and your local copy?

I accidentally force pushed a really stale master branch not too long ago, but luckily a co-worker had an up to date copy that he could restore. I still felt pretty stupid though.

You guys don't use Gerrit or something similar to try and avoid that sort of thing?

We use GitHub's pull request / code review features. It works really well but sometimes you just have a brain fart.

The beauty of Git is that you don't really need to worry too much about brain farts since its distributed. You have to work kind of hard to mess up all copies of the repo, especially to the point where you lose data.

While I was in San Francisco, some dude said this to me:

I had an interview with a female founder!
Yes, he said it as if he had stuck gold.

For those who are wondering, HN does, in fact, reflect the real picayune minds of San Francisco.

We just don't talk like this in LA.

Totally not me. I get more done in that one day than I do in a whole month. It's incredible what can happen when you aren't tensed up waiting for the next tap on the shoulder, AIM, email, or other distraction.

Everything I do takes hours of non-disturbed time. It is no wonder I don't get anything done anymore.

I get pretty much no work done now that I'm around others more frequently.

That's not necessarily a bad thing at my job, just something I've noticed.

Silly humans with their socializing. Don't they know we could be silently producing value?

I've been going bananas refactoring our node framework over and over. This is a really rare opportunity for me to work while no one else is working – and we don't happen to have any major projects in full swing.

For me its just more about little distractions. If a bunch of people are working I have to talk about what other people are working on, answer customer questions, give rough estimates for how long different features might take, look at test failures, help someone debug some weird bug they're finding, etc. etc.

If I'm working by myself almost all of that goes away. Usually even customer/support issues are way less frequent since if I'm working by myself it means its probably around a holiday time.

I'm almost done with my npm repos port of our node framework. For the last week I've spent most waking hours working on it. It's been a long time since I've been in this flow/obsessed/whatever you call it state. I have to remind myself to eat and pull myself away to sleep. I go to bed and wake up thinking code.

I didn't know if I had it in me anymore. Recently I've had these runs for work when I had to, but not just for me. Feels good. I definitely picked the right career. I did stand-up comedy in my 20s. Even if I was extremely successful at it I got the feeling I'd be miserable. I just didn't love it.

(Ok yeah I took a break to drink a little and watch a movie )
