Looking forward to Ethereum mining becoming obsolete and a flood of tens of millions of used GPUs hitting the market

It will be legendary

It's already started. Seeing the rigs people are selling, and the price, is better than any porn you could conjure up.

Some interesting offers I've seen upto now.

250€ - RX 5700 XT
240€ - RTX 2060 Super
180€ - RTX 2060
150€ - RX 5600 XT

Second hand AMD GPU's are selling cheaper than their Nvidia counterparts with same performance.
Lower level GPU refuse to go below 100€ though. Cards like the RX 580 or the GTX 1060 should be going for 50-80€ or so.

Last week I bought an RTX 2080 for 280€. I saw them going for 400-ish all the time and 280€ from someone at 40km was just too good to pass up, for that moment in time.
What cemented this decision was that it wasn't even a mining GPU, but it came from a 4K gamer.

Hopefully I can flip the PC quickly enough, before 280€ becomes standard.

And that 12GB 4080 is a 4070 at best, maybe even a 4060 Ti. Crazy (scammy!) that they're classifying it "4080" with such large cuts to shader cores and bandwidth. And weirdly enough, looks like the 4090 is decent value this time.

I'm looking for a sh laptop, below 200€

After weeding through the 10-year old crap that is being offered at ridic prices, these are my main candidates.

https://wallapop.com/item/computador...l-hp-826430213

https://wallapop.com/item/acer-aspire-5-823808497

Here are the CPU's side by side:

Seems close. What would you pick? Both seem pretty good value 4 money

my suggestion would be to get the processor which is two years newer (the intel i3) it probably benefits from more learning and growth and development.

So I bought a sh laptop (Acer Aspire 3 N19C1, manufactured 12/2019) for 200€ with i5 10210U, 512GB Intel SSD NVMe and 8GB RAM. Pretty good deal, imo.
I opened it up, because I'm a geek and wanted to replace the factory thermal paste.

What is that below the copper, on the left?

The cooper and metal cooling plate is floating over the left cooling surface without touching it. I never saw that before and I've opened quite few laptops.

LOL Acer, I suppose?

I "solved" it by putting a 0.5mm thermal pad on it the left cooling area, so that it would touch the copper arm.

I still think this is a misconstruction by Acer.

Looking for the best domain registrar. I understand that there are several comparisons online but the only problem is, once you set one up, it could take months to be able to transfer if you are not content with the registrar. Before I move ahead, I am wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with registrars. Or, if you could recommend a smaller registrar that does not have the red tape that the larger companies have.

I looked up ICANN and it indicates a 60-day lock before you can transfer a domain to another registrar after registration. However, it also indicates that this rule is based on the discretion of the individual registrar. Does anyone know a registrar that provides a little leeway on the 60-day lock since it is under the discretion of the individual registrar and not ICANN itself.

i'm not a web developer, so maybe you're just a level(s) above me. but what could realistically make you unhappy with your choice in registrars within 60 days of registering?

it isn't necessary to use the same company as both your registrar as your host. so if you register somewhere intending to use them as your host as well, but you end up unhappy with the hosting services, then just change your host and point your DNS records to the new host.

This. I can't imagine the use case for wanting to move away from a registrar in the fashion described above: if you don't want to use a registrar, then just don't use it in the first place?

Just wondering why the 60-day lock even exists. There should be more fluid movement between registrars if you do not feel their product is adequate or if they do not have the features you wanted after registering with them. It seems like an unnecessary rule to lock a domain for 60 days if afterwards, you find out you are unhappy with the service.

I suspect that it is to mitigate the risk of people hiding the history of domain registration when creating a new domain for spam and assorted abuse.

In Business, Finance, Investing we have been discussing LLMs as they pertain to internet search with OpenAI tech now Integrated into Snapchat and Bing search.

If anybody has extensive knowledge or has worked with LLMs or big tech companies please feel free to add to the discussion in the A.I. thread or trading thread. Thanks. I'm really excited about LLM coding and search adoption.

I used Amazon's Route 53 and later, when I sold the website, the transfer was done in a couple of days. Not sure where you got that "Months" from.

I think Google Domains is good.

Bumping this rather than making a new thread as it's fairly low content - any suggestions on how best to download a copy of an entire blog (someone else's, so can't use anything on a dashboard on the site itself)? Ones in question run across multiple years, so clicking on each month of the archive and doing something like copy/paste into word seems too time intensive. Would like to sort this sooner rather than later as google/blogger looks like doing some cleanup of old stuff in the near future so as I don't think the guy who wrote the stuff I want is around on that site any more it could be disappearing soon (although I'm guessing something like archive.org would still hold a copy). Something that could virtually click on each month of the archives and download into something like a pdf would be perfect but open to any suggestions

There are scraping tools that will download a whole site. I used to use one but I can't remember the name and it would be super old now.

I believe that I have a project that would be allowed to be proposed/discussed in this sub. Its mission is that its not proprietary in nature. But I notice that there is a rule about the post promoting a product.

This is a project, but its not a product...its open source....will it be ok?

How's everyone doing in this tech environment?

Just survived a third round of layoffs this year.

Sounds like things are turning around (at least in my niche of the industry, storage) so fingers crossed for no more headcount reductions.

i hope so, been trying to get back into tech after taking a hiatus to travel in 2016

every job i've applied to has had hundreds of applicants

congrats on surviving it though

it doesn't help that i've been gambling for a living that entire time, but i was regularly getting contacted by headhunters asking me to apply to head of product/vp type roles in 2016 so it's not like i wasn't a decent candidate at one point

still doing alright in dfs but have been trying to get back into tech for last 2 years, have applied to over 600 jobs and only had a dozen or so interviews, only got to the 2nd stage twice and never got a single offer
