Infra/dev ops work is going to get you paiddddd so grabbing experience and promotions right now seems like a smart move. We’re always criminally understaffed in infrastructure work so I imagine we would just throw money at good candidates.
I’m rising to the point where I’m in meetings, designing and delegating way too much actually work. It would be nice to go back a stage and actually write code again I think, but I don’t want a pay cut just hoping my company ipos someday and I could go be an early eng at a startup for a while without a pay cut crushing me financially.
My only advice for new tech employees is to try to avoid lifestyle creep as you earn more and more.
Yea, I already am making the national avg for a senior devops role, and I’m pretty sure if I become a lead here it’s much higher salary. I’m throwing disgusting numbers (to me) at recruiters for positions and they aren’t batting an eye lol. I actually hope to get where you are eventually, because I don’t really have a passion for this stuff, I just happen to be good at it and think I’m a better fit for managing. I just dont wanna be a manager that knows **** all about the tech.

As for me, I couldn't take working with the idiot consultants any longer, so retired in June 2020.
Yes, a lot of being able to do that was avoiding lifestyle creep. I've always had a simple lifestyle and been fortunate to have a decent amount of skill in a high-paying field.
Of course, haven't traveled like I would've liked due to the plague, but a couple camping trips around the good old USA each of the last two summers. Other than that, just lots of stuff around the house/yard.
Everyone be safe and well, have the kind of holidays you desire.
Thanks! I have definitely not avoided lifestyle creep but I’m not overextended. Just upgraded a few things that desperately needed upgrades. My hobbies are mostly pretty cheap.
Congrats on retirement! I hope to take this rocketship to the moon and retire in my early 50’s.
My rough gameplan is to learn as much as possible in the next 3-5 years, start feeling confident, and land a senior role at a FAANG (actually AANG because I’d never work for facebook)
