haha, i can remember thinking the same thing as you when trying to find my first job. it felt more like they are trying to meet some kind of quota for people interviewed than anything.

irvine, lots of game companies around here, going to try to make my rounds with the resume and then expand outward if i have to. ideally don't want to move or work in LA.

also willing to work outside of games too obviously, but games are the only thing I'm passionate about.

Work for the man, get paid triple, work half as hard, make games in your own time.

first i wanna learn how, then do that. I don't really know how at the moment. or at least not well enough to venture out on my own

my resume is getting a lot of replies. i have a phone interview next week for a database solutions company that wants a C++ programmer, right up my alley

I dunno. to me, programming is just data. does it really matter what the data is?

well, i hate programming. hate might be a strong word but I've never found strong enjoyment from programming itself. I'd also rate myself as an average to below average programmer.

I like solving puzzles, fixing hard bugs can be satisfying, and optimizing/refactoring can provide its own set of interesting challenges. But by and large, if I am working on something, I'd like it to be something I myself would actually mess around with or I just can't bring myself to care.

maybe when I am actually in a professional real world environment my attitude might change, but my biggest fear is that I will be bored in an office. I am used to driving a boat and being outside all day.

I've worked on two "real" projects, one was for a class that barrin was also in and we had to build a semi-realistic point of sale system for a restaurant in some ridiculously tiny time frame. I had a good product in the end, but I was so uninterested in it I ended up drinking my way through most of the course. my team was pretty incompetent too so I did 90% of the work.

the second project I helped out on was writing/fixing server code for an old, dead MMO i used to play, but the devs were egotistical jackasses and I got tired of it. I think a few of them have since left the project, so maybe I'll go back to that again.

lol dude you are not anywhere close to average. sorry about getting personal but I notice this a lot from you. I have seen it in your blog many times that you try to downplay your accomplishments and abilities. most devs are not gonna be able to write a point of sale system. like you will really be surprised at the ability of most professional devs. within a few months or years you will surely be one of the best at your company unless you go to some superstar company.

anyway, when you wrote that pos system, it didnt give you a bit of a rush to go from a blank screen to seeing a bunch of items and prices? and then to see those numbers change?

Well thank you for the kind words but I guess I’m just comparing myself to my peers at school. I feel like I’m around the median with any kind of programming assignment. They also tend to take me a little longer than the people around me.

I was a little excited at first with the POS system, but it became a huge pain in my ass very quickly and I have a low frustration threshold.

Don’t ever try to make an application in java, lol.

School is just way different than work. It's really not even close. Not just atmosphere, but also very different skillsets.

I also thought I would hate programming jobs. I did one internship with the Government and it was kind of miserable. Very little mentorship, no real software developers, and work that wasn't important at all.

The luckiest thing that ever happened to me (career wise) was that I got a really good first full time job and made a good network of people to work with. I'd avoid forming any hard and fast opinions about yourself or a programming career at this point.

Yea building a network asap can be super helpful.

jmakin, there's little doubt if you stick with programming and get more experience you will be very good at it.

I took some classes with jmakin. He’s above average for sure. Most of the people at school are a bunch of donks who can’t program. He’s no superstar but he’s more competent than the others at our school.

Given some leetcode, I can see him crushing interviews. And he will surely succeed if he lands a job that has a good mentor.

I appreciate the encouragement. And lol barrin i wouldve failed the compiler class without your help. That was a brutal project

Is there a way to make the end+home keys, when pressed together, got to the middle of the current line? Or something similar?

I guess I should look into programming one of the macro keys on my razer keyboard to do this

is that faster than just clicking the middle of a line?
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

1. Clicking might not be an option
2. More hands on keyboard, less hands moving from keyboard to mouse and back imo

Or shortcuts for the command line if you don't already care for vim bindings, i.e. https://askubuntu.com/a/45546

Some useful line editing key bindings provided by the Readline library:

Ctrl-A: go to the beginning of line
Ctrl-E: go to the end of line
Alt-B: skip one word backward
Alt-F: skip one word forward
Ctrl-U: delete to the beginning of line
Ctrl-K: delete to the end of line
Alt-D: delete to the end of word

Any good books (they’re like web pages only they never change) or other sources for an intro to blockchains? May get the chance to work for a friends startup that is using them and have very little knowledge of them.
