seems you should be able to get a pay rate if you are jumping 2 levels and already make more.

I’m jumping two levels from when I left. It’s equivalent level to my current position.

I asked a few people at that level and the offer is right in line with what they are making.

You must have missed the whole 2 vs. 3 debacle. I would argue that python is the worst choice for language in almost every situation. I guess it wins in machine learning.

Seems to be the scripting language of choice very often.

I think maintenance of python codebases can be difficult.

This is true. Perl was the scripting champion 10+ years ago. As a project becomes more complex, and adds more developers, the less inclined you should be to pick Python for that project.

Actually, if you know python and another language equally well, I would pick python to use in interviews to save you time.

Is anyone else here in OMSCS aka Online M.S. in CS @ Georgia Tech?

I've been thinking about it. AT&T will pay for an advanced degree and that's one of the options they offer. Another I've looked at is a MS in data science from Notre Dame (also online)

I would love to get a good discussion going in regards to grad school, whether it's worth it, B&M vs online, etc. I've been considering it for awhile as well.

Hi there, has someone read the book "Developer Hegemony: The Future of Labor" ?

I recommend it, it's kind of frustrating but at the same time interesting.
I mean, it says to many things are so true about software like industry, and it was like I understood where my frustrations like developer came from.

Basically, the book says that developing in the corporate world really sucks and it engages you to make your own firm or even work in a startup . But it goes in depth.

If have you read it, do u think the things it says are true?

Online is the far superior option, IMO. It's a fraction of the cost of a B&M M.S., is more flexible and lower opportunity cost.

I'm a poker pro, I've never had another job and I don't have a CS degree, so I expect an M.S. in CS to be highly valuable for me. Both GA Tech and Texas offer an online M.S. for less than $12k total, so the main costs are stress and time commitment.

I'm surprised it's that cheap, I hadn't looked into the Georgia Tech cost, but the Notre Dame data science program is like $50k I think, for 5 semesters, but they cut us a deal and give it to us for $25k.

A degree might be a waste of money but I don't think it's a waste of time. In my case I don't think I'll get much monetary gain out of it, but I like school, and I always regretted quitting grad school, so...

I already have a BS in CS and am not likely to be getting any more promotions for 5+ years or so regardless of degree, so I would be pretty much doing it for personal satisfaction and enjoyment.

The GA Tech program looks to be decent and it's cheap enough that my employer will cover it 100%.

MS in comp sci is almost always not worth it from a pure financial perspective.

You might want to look into the GA Tech Online M.S. Analytics (OMSA) program. It has numerous advantages over ND: cost ($12k), doesn't require you to visit the campus, course selection and flexibility. Illinois also has an online M.S. CS in Data Science which is under $25k.

The GA Tech and Texas online programs are dirt cheap. I would be shocked if career ev < tuition/fees for most devs. However, each course requires >10 hours/wk, so the whole program requires >1500 hours.

Yes I think it is very accurate. His characterization of middle management is really good IMO. What he writes about staying out of the delivery cycle is worth considering. My current role is basically in new product R&D. Really like that change from roles I have had in the past. Also the opening chapter is definitely food for thought. The book can get a little tedious at times. I had to put it down and come back to it. His prescription for getting ahead in the corporate world is good too.
