I think you’re underestimating your leverage here. Even if B won’t move on pay they’ll probably move on something. And even if they don’t, it should still be leverage against A (even though you probably didn’t need it as much as you think you did).

The 72 hour offer is almost certainly bull****. And if not, **** them. Why work for a company like that.

Do you really not care who you work for (as in it all depends on the offers) or do you have a clear preference?

Edit: Honesty the deadline on the offer just pisses me off in most cases. Unless they’re literally hiring only one person for the role and they already have a backup they want to offer if you pass (something that is super rare in tech these days) it’s just a ****ty sales tactic.

Maybe I’m just Canadian but this seems pretty unethical to me. And it seems like a good way to leave a final bad impression with a bunch of people that you might want to work with down the road.

A good network of coworkers and managers that like you and like working with you is really valuable. While it probably wouldn’t be noticed it’s not something I’d be risking.

Yep it’s based only on X role and Y years of experience. The pay band is +- 20k. So it seems like the only way to get a significant pay raise is by promotion. Company B also has a 1 year vesting cliff where as company A is monthly.

I want to get the numbers from Company B and then have company’s A match so I can move on.

Side note, I really want to have my last day be August 7th since so I can fly out earlier, not use PTO and save money on vacation. Which means I should give notice tomorrow to hit that 2 week mark. But that means I probably won’t sign anything yet by then. Should I still do it anyways? I’ll need a VP sign off from company A but it should be relatively straight forward.

Yea the whole 72 hour deadline blows. I’m just waiting to hear back numbers so I can take to company A so they can match and sign. I have a clear preference but I haven’t made it known to either recruiters what they are.

Add 10-20% to this.

Probably would be ok doing that in my view.

Anyways, I had my company B interview almost a month ago. Due to holidays and having to do another in-person follow up interview with the hiring manager last Tuesday (since he was on PTO when I interviewed), I have a phone call tomorrow with the recruiter. I keep getting the "You will hear results soon, let me schedule a call later", but never actually get a call set up. But it is finally happening tomorrow morning.

My guess is that I was the 2nd choice candidate and they didn't want to offer me anything until the 1st rejected OR it's one of those things where the hiring manager didn't think it would be a good team fit and they want me to interview for a different team. I think if it was an outright reject, I would have known so a month back.

It's going to be interesting since company A has been asking for updates about company B. Company A's recruiter did leave a voicemail late Friday saying that he has numbers to share on Monday, so I don't think they are going to adjust the numbers if they find out company B is out of the picture. My paranoia is telling me that I'll find out that company B rejects me and that during the call to discuss numbers with company A is going to change their numbers based on that. It's stupid paranoia heh.

Anyways, this is going to be interesting day tomorrow.
You can give 2 weeks, but if handoff is done no reason to hang around an extra 2 days. It might annoy your manager a bit but it won't burn bridges.

I think you're being paranoid lol. If A already wants to give you an offer, the result of B will not change that. Congrats!

Do you guys ever calculate what your take home daily earnings are? Do it if you feel like being depressed.
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

Nah that doesnt make me depressed - calculating hourly after pulling 75 hour weeks makes me depressed. We bill other ppl $200/hr for my time. Lol

Re: these two companies A and B. Man, I’m telling you, just pick the one you like the best and gives the best vibe. They sound like large companies so there should be plenty of info out there to research on that. Salary, in my opinion, should be the absolute last in consideration unless the difference is like 30%+ - and even then, I’d definitely take a 30% pay hit if it meant doing something I am mildly interested in, in an environment that doesnt suck vs some hellhole that holds you by golden handcuffs. I am doing quite comfortably though so maybe that’s just me, money has never been a huge motivator for me.

so this min/maxing of salary discussion that goes on here blows my mind. If I lose ~500k lifetime earnings from not stressing myself out with all that BS i’d gladly take it

I don't think a 30% pay cut really makes sense imo unless you're also getting a higher position with more scope and responsibility. But in that case it's unlikely you would need to take such a pay cut. If you're that unhappy it's better to be a bit more patient and find a good offer or move within the company.

So company B gave me the offer details and is willing to give me a sign on bonus tomatch the gap in pay with company A. So the total comp is essentially the same with company b being slightly lower.

Is there any leverage here I can use here with company A despite them already beating company B? I just don’t know the right play is here. I’m thinking of saying something to the effect that I am excited about both companies and I’m still having a hard time deciding. And say that if company A can increase their offer by 20%, it will make my decision a lot easier.

A sign on bonus is a one year thing - I had a company try the same **** on me. Unless you want me to quit in a year it's not the same.

I don't know if they'll go for 20% but
* the person who you're negotiating with - it's not his money.
* he's probably a money guy more than a tech guy. He probably has more respect for people who negotiate than those who don't
* your salary effectively anchors your worth. If they pay more to hire you, they will think more highly of you. It's one of those post-facto things, if I paid more, it's because it was worth more, not because I got out negotiated.

Yeah, tell A that B gave you a competitive offer and you have only limited time to decide (true statement!), give them #s you want (10-20% higher) and tell them if they can do that, you're in.

Mobile front-end devs: do Samsung users still favor the built-in Samsung browser over Chrome? And if so is it still a PITA vs. Chrome?

I have a Note 4 currently and had a Note 2 a few years back. Neither of them even shipped with the Samsung browser IIRC

This seems to suggest otherwise: https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/c...sung_internet/

Although it could be certain carriers remove it in favor of Chrome.

Looks like about 5% of US mobile is on Samsung Internet (which is Chrome engine under the coverage - but usually like a year+ behind): http://gs.statcounter.com/browser-ma...-201806-201906

I think 4% above his initial offer, which I believe is a bit higher than what he's making now?

Haha yea 4% above my initial offer.

Company B’s offer wasn’t strong enough for me to convince the recruiter that I would take it.

Overall the new job will be a 32% pay increase. It’s one of most solid tech companies wth top talent so I’m overall happy.
