I haven't used a Mac in a very long time, but I was a software engineer many moons ago:

That guy is doing everything BUT coding most of the time, from the looks of it. ADD-infected, semi-BS artist vibe.

Mihkel, this is one of those examples of how I know the image you project is mostly bull****.

I would think "Oh no, another Mac fanboy". Once Windows figures out how to make developers lives easier then no one in their right mind will develop on Mac anymore.

Oh, and around half of the icons are ones that show up in a default install unless you explicitly remove them.

I count 12 default icons

For development on PC hardware anything but a solid Linux distribution like fedora is just fps

I don't get what the big deal is. My biggest problem with it is that he is using a mac.

I hope no one sees my messy desktop during an interview - mostly temp/junk files I dump there for easy access and bulk clean up every year or so when I feel like it.

Although taking a closer look at my desktop, I see: Cygwin Terminal, Git Bash, Oracle VM VirtualBox, VMware Player, WinSCP, Wireshark, a folder titled 'Android SDK', a random DLL dropped on my desktop, Github windows app, a Security Sertificate titled 'expired cert' (not sure why I needed to save this lol) so maybe this is a benefit.

Big difference between desktop and dock though

There are other ways to open programs. And some people don't care about clutter, even good developers.

You guys are reading way too much into something that is neither here nor there.

Lol, no kidding. My Desktop is a giant mess of screenshots because that's where mac puts them and who uses the Desktop?

Opening programs with mouse + icon seems pretty silly to me. But to each their own.

It's no slower than launcher if you're using a trackpad

The dropbox app will automatically move screenshots to a dropbox folder and place a shareable link on your clipboard. It's super handy and pretty much the only thing that I use dropbox for.

Just had my onsite yesterday in SF. Got an email saying "good news", the director wants to talk to you for 30 mins on Monday. I assume they are going to give me an offer, or grill me more on behavioral questions.

I never gave them explicit numbers on expectations of salary and they do know I am still interviewing with other companies. However, I'm still very early in the process for those companies, so I probably won't finish them within 2 weeks. And even if I did get a better offer from the other companies, I still would like to go with the company I interviewed with yesterday.

So my concern is that I don't want to be low balled. I spoke to someone on Reddit who got a 110k base offer but the company knew upfront beforehand about another competing offer and the exact numbers. If they can offer at least 100, I'll be happy.

With that being said. Do I have any leverage with no other offers? Should I bother negotiating? Or should I try to extend the deadline and finish up the other interviews and Maybe use those other offers as leverage.

I don't consider myself an expert on the matter, but I do think telling them you're exploring options with other companies too and going through with the other interviews increases pressure on them to make a stronger offer if they want you. It doesn't hurt to be picky; my current employer increased my offer by 10k just because I waited a week while thinking over if I wanted to move jobs or not.

btw - congratulations!!

100k to work onsite in SF sounds awful tbh.

100k sounds about right for a first gig out of college in SF. It's probably right in the middle of what I'd expect to see (85k to 115k). Definitely try to negotiate up from whatever they offer, but you aren't getting totally screwed at 100k

I don't have official numbers of an offer yet, if there is even an offer. How embarrassing would it be if I didn't get it?

Anyways, I'll update you guys when I'll get the phone call on Monday.

Also nothing wrong with asking to extend offer deadline. Be clear and honest that you're at the beginning of the job search. They will pressure you like crazy to sign quickly but don't take the bait. The deadline is artificial and pure HR bull****. Lots of opportunities in SF even for new grads with no experience.

Got my phone call. Extended an offer for 105k base, plus other bonuses. Everything was almost exact with what the redditor told me except with 1,000 less RSU and 5k less base. I almost didn't have the balls to ask for a higher base until he asked me a second time about how I felt about the package. I used the fact that I was in the process still with other companies such as Apple to leverage an extra 5k on the base. He said the team could definitely do that.

Easiest 5k I ever made. And that was nerve-wracking. I'm glad I did this now then try and worry about raises later down the line. Though I could have probably asked for more?

That's perfectly reasonable, you might have gotten $10k, but you'll never know. Go in there and kick ass and you'll get a lot more than $5k in a few years.

I tried to hire a guy a while back who had worked for me before so I knew he was good. He dropped out of school and was making $65k. I offered $70k and he wanted $75k. My boss didn't like it as we can get guys out of school with a degree for $63k. So I used up some political capital and got my boss to agree to $75k. I called the guy and he said he did some research and thinks he's worth $85k and won't work for less. I told him good luck. Last time I heard he was making $67k at the same place, writing scripts to trick people into signing up for insurance quotes.

We have another guy here who started at $65k and is now at $115k. The guy above would probably be at $115k if he had come over when I first offered. Austin's a big town and there's lots of jobs so he shouldn't have a hard time finding one, but I'm never going to hire that guy.

That's a dick move on the guy's part and I'm glad you guys passed him over. Once you say a number and the other party agrees, you can't just ask for more again.
