Just had a random thought...

When I was in 10th grade, my school started a calc program to get students from pre-calc --> calculus. At the end of the program, we had the option to take the ap calc exam. We were the first group. Seeing how there are so many idiots in programming now, does anyone think it would make me standout from the crowd if I included that on my resume? [passing ap calc exam]

We just went over this in politics: bragging about AP courses makes you look like an idiot.

You'd have an unethical algorithm.

What are the best sites to put your resume if looking for contract work? Is Craigslist still the best spot? Others?

I fail to see how its bragging. That's like saying listing 100 things on your resume is bragging.

Aren't there entire platforms built for contracting work?

Thinking elance/odesk and competitors.

It seems like a weird thing to put on your resume. I went to college when I was 16 and I would never have considered mentioning it on my resume.

My understanding, and experience, is that those sites almost entirely cater to the bottom of the market.

Everyone I know that has had any success contracting has started out working gigs within their network

I can't even fathom the arrogance of someone who thinks that's a compelling argument for someone to light 20 grand or whatever on fire, because you should be ever so grateful he offered you a job out of the kindness of his heart. A sacrificial offering of that nature is the least you can do!

Speaking of which, one of the things I like about the new job is essentially no bonus - instead my base is higher. So, OK, I might miss out on occasional windfalls but IME bonus is underpaid more often than it's overpaid. Probably the only exception to that was when I worked for a high frequency trading company, which, most years, paid very very good bonus.

Yea I was going to put a disclaimer about working on the site. I was just vaguely aware of them from a couple of years ago when I was looking for extra income.

As long as you can undercut people working from Bangladesh, you'll do fine on odesk.

Both Craigslist and Odesk or whatever it is called now is the same stuff. They want a complete Uber, Twitter, Facebook clone for $100 or deferred equity. Of course, it has to built in WordPress so the client can make random changes through the CMS portal.

That's depressing. I've worked for the same company for 6 years - everyone who's left is at another big company which would want contractors full time onsite. I'm looking for a side gig.

Clearly I need to network more. Just saying that phrase makes my stomach churn. I hate glad-handing and am terrible at it. Unless I get a few drinks in me then I'm the life of the party. Hmmm.

Btw if any of you have a node app you're trying to get off the ground I'll be glad to help for free just to have something to do to keep my skills sharp. I'm also really interested in docker, noSQL, angular 2 and web components. I guess I could convert my open source projects to ES-6 and typescript.

But another thing I'm not that good at is making up stuff to do just for myself. I need someone to count on me to finish it. Otherwise I tend to stop when I hit the painful part and wander over to 2p2 to argue politics instead.

Also has anyone else noticed recruiter emails slowing down lately? I used to get one every few days and now haven't gotten one for a while. It's slowed down to maybe once a month. I wonder if the bubble is silently popping.

Market seems hotter than ever. Fortune 100 here has about 50 jobs with the word "java" in it they can't fill. Amazon opening a location here and wants to fill 100 tech jobs. Good luck.

Yeah it doesn't look bad for full time jobs. I'm looking for a part-time side gig. Experienced part-time contractor seems to be kind of rare niche.
