No but it felt similar haha.

I had to write a function that will print out a multiplication table of size NxN. And if the number is divisible by 5, replace it with X instead of the number.

Come to think of it, maybe I did fail, since the interview ended earlier than the 1 hour window. And there were only 2 questions, where one of them was only a coding one.

Oh jeez

On the other hand, we talked about salary and equity expectations. So who knows??

Right who knows, maybe they do more than one round.

I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I generally treat the big in depth articles like the NYT article with a lot of skepticism. They write these articles to tell a simple story in an 'interesting' way. So they pick one narrative and go with it. While I don't have a lot of insider knowledge of Amazon, I can confidently say that everytime I've read an indepth article of a topic I do know a lot about it - it's almost completely wrong and at best a single oversimplified facet of a complex story.

I'll add that the NYT article really lost me at:

The wording of the bolded is a perfect example of how you take a completely standard thing that all companies do and word it in a way to reinforce the simplified narrative that you're trying to sell.
"We have Nerf wars, almost daily, that often get a bit out of hand. We go out after work. We have “Fun Fridays”. We banter, argue, play video games and Foosball."

Pretty sure a 45+ year old man or woman wouldn't be considered a good cultural fit. Not sure how many women would be considered a good cultural fit.

That's fairly close to my office - I'm 46 and fit in just fine - although I do beg off at least half of the out of office excursions.

Sometimes ITT I think I must be missing things.

How did we go from the NYT article to cultural fit for older people and women?

So hard to tell with these things. Tech interviewers are really good at making you feel like you did well. They never reveal their cards.

Thinking it over in my head, I'm pretty sure I failed. There's no way. Oh well, we all have to fail at least once right?

Speaking of interviewing and cultural fit. I have an interview over beers coming up soon.

So, if I have about 60 minutes and I can down a beer once every 10 minutes (Austin beers are pretty watery), that sounds like I should be able to drink 6 beers. I think I should add one for calming my nerves and one for self-congratulations, so that is about 8 beers. Sound about right?

Should I challenge the interviewer to a drinking game? What about bets? I have a few ideas, like

"I bet you $5 I can snort this entire shot of vodka through a straw."

Actually, I should just start drinking now. I don't want to be unprepared for the interview, and it would only have myself to blame if I didn't jump on it a week in advance.

I think I did well Well at least for my 1st ever technical interview. Had 2 questions, was able to solve the first one with relative ease I think. Only mistake I did was I did was:
if (number % 5) instead of if (number % 5 == 0).
Which the interviewer pointed out to me.

Second question about explaining MVC with a screenshot of an app (iOS) and how I would architecture that.

We talked salary and equity briefly and that was it.
Is that JavaScript? If so use ===. "" == 0 is true.

No I wrote it in C++. I am going to go back to studying cracking the code interview then spam my resume in December after school semester is over. Hopefully I'll have an app out in the app store by then.

If you guys were to watch an explainer video, would you prefer to see one in a 2D cartoon/animation style or whiteboard style? Which one do you think would capture your interest most for a tech service?

Off topic but curious.

How many of you guys notice small bugs that are usually just visual but can also be behavioural bugs for programs other than your own.

I've noticed a decent amount, usually report them and wait to see if they ever get fixed for programs that I have no access to the source code.
Now if the program is sold and built by a single programmer, the bug will be fixed almost instantly.
Yet if not by single developer, it may take ages or even ignored.

I don't know, if there is some reason for that or maybe i'm observing something that doesn't exist.

this is def an "it depends" or "it's all in the execution."

but, since you're looking for an answer, i'll say "probably a cartoon/animation" as whiteboard explanations tend to be drier...

EDIT: i'll add one more thing from my own experience. at some point we spent a bunch of time doing a video and thought it would be the cure to all of our "people not getting it" ills. it wasn't. lots of people don't want to bother watching them, and it's way better to explain the product in a sentence or two, with some very simple static elaborations to go along with it for the curious. this may or may not apply to you, just thought it was worth saying....

Are you guys still running your explainer video?

I'm trying to summarize the contents of a fairly lengthy screencast series. I have a lot of stuff written out for website content, lots of headlines, easy to skim, etc. but it's a lot to take in.

Since the series is launching soon, I planned to try a 30-45 second explainer video as something the user would see right under the main headlines, which will lead into the meat of the content.

I did a lot of research and it seems like a well designed explainer video does help a lot for getting people to stay on your site to get the gist of it but personally I don't really care for or watch them. I go straight for the content and make my own assessment in 10 seconds or less (usually). I figured my personal taste would bias my decision.

I really like the new digital ocean home page https://www.digitalocean.com/. It's so simple and elegant.

So is Android development as big of a disaster as it first appears to me, or will it start making sense soon? I'm not even doing anything interesting yet, I'm just trying to display a simple popup message and my head is spinning. In iOS, I would create an AlertView/AlertController, customize the title/message/buttons, register a callback or a block when a button is tapped if needed, and then show the alert. Easy, it's a couple lines of code.

Android, I go to the documentation and the 'simplest use' is a ****ing subclass that is eight billion lines long. The **** is this ****?

The android docs don't look as pretty or organized as apple's. But hey, it's a LOT better than windows xaml docs.

Shoe, I'm with GM in that we didn't have a ton of success with our video.

I think we were aiming at a developer audience and maybe they're less likely to watch a video? Not sure, and I'm sure its highly dependent on the type of audience you're aiming at.

What are the going rates for college/university programming instructors in the US? Got an offer for ~60 Euro/h pretax for teaching JAVA. 3 - 4.5h/week (I think I'd do 3h max.). Not really teaching but more walking around and giving advice to people working on programming projects.
Don't feel like taking it because I value free time a lot but also kind of miss teaching. Money seems ok but haven't calculated my what'd I'd get net (I think roughly 75%)

200ish euros a week for a few hours a week seems decent to me. You're basically getting paid to walk around a university campus creeping on college girls.

JJ,
I'm targeting developers too, hmm. So it's not just me. Most devs don't care about these videos?

So who updated to Windows 10 from 8.1 or 8 or 7.
I'm debating on doing it, I see no benefit but maybe some speed improvements that are so small that i wouldn't even notice them.

I've read online that 10 is basically huge spyware that you're opting into to use any feature.
Yet, i'll be using OS X for everything still but occasionally using windows on vm to check software that is running on windows.
