Gender doesn't matter when you're at the level you want to be in any field.

If you're at the top, the people below that are intelligent will know based on how much information you give the community that you're rightfully there based on merit.

The others will have their own self views based on who they are as a person, no matter what gender and who has time for worrying about that.

Hiding your gender or identity is silly for those people but there are good reasons to hide one's identity so meh.

I mean, "their" Twitter makes it pretty clear what gender they are.

When you are at the top of the world, things are easier?

Thanks!

You sure I wrote that?

Unless you're aiming for the top of the world and being sarcastic, I'm going to assume you didn't read what I wrote.

Regarding the article, it seems to be a lament of the company changing focus, evolving. I can empathize with the author. However, I also realize that this kind of change occurs frequently especially with leadership changes. Nothing lasts forever except death.

Everyone's different of course but that's my experiences.

I find it sad, because I've experienced life on the other end of the spectrum in a small community in a beautiful part of the world doing manual work (cooking), absent of computers for all intents and purposes and daily meeting new people and having great experiences. Without a doubt, that is the life I wish to pursue and know I would be happiest in.

Unfortunately a careerist society makes it very difficult to break the pattern. And I do feel trapped sometimes for other reaons, but now have an end goal 3-5 years down the line which I'm working towards which is good to have.

Making it sound worse than it is, but working on a computer is something I feel quite good at, make good money from, is rewarding in lots of other various ways but is something that is increasingly becoming more stressful to the point it's infiltrating pretty much all aspects of my life.
Touche on all of this. I remember working in restaurants, where the intensity is so high that the "normal" of life is tossed out, and you can say whatever you want and not worry about being sued because no matter what you say will be one-upped.

I do remember my very first office job, and remember being so damn exhausted for the first month, sleeping 12+ hours a day. One of my building mates was pretty new to the whole office work thing (did GIS, which is bad-ass, but that's another topic), and he was saying how much he recalled feeling far more tired now than he did when he was working 14 hour days as a store manager, which meant he was on his feet all day. The human body isn't really built to sit at a desk all day. I could go out in the blazing sun, walk around all day, dig a hole, and feel much less exhausted at the end of the day than I would on any day I sit in front of the computer all day.

The biggest effect I've noticed is how absurdly low my calorie intake is now. I think I should eat more, but I feel like I'm force-feeding myself more than enjoying a dinner these days.

I try to balance the docile work with various activities I do at least once a week each. I can't imagine how screwed up my body would be right now if I sat in front of a computer all day, sat in my car to go home, then sat and did what?

I'm doing this Udacity "nanodegree" about android developing:
https://www.udacity.com/course/andro...odegree--nd801
The requirements say
Quote:
This is not a "Zero to Hero" program. Entering students are expected to have prior experience building applications (web or mobile) in Java or another object-oriented programming language.

You should have at least 1-2 years of experience in Java or another object-oriented programming language prior to enrolling.
Well I had exactly 30 days of Java "experience" before starting, i.e. doing some intro to Java course of theirs, so challenge accepted!

It's working out ok so far, I'm almost a month ahead of pace but holy **** they were not joking, this is really hard for me. It's a lot of fun and a lot of frustration - I have to look things up and learn new stuff they take as given every day. Not sure what the point of this post is, just wanted to vent / procrastinate I guess.

I feel like I remember having an "aha" moment with programming when I was starting out. Like it's one thing to follow a few basic lessons declaring integers and stuff, but really grokking it takes time. After 6 months you'll feel a lot more comfortable.

Oh yea studies have shown that sitting all day is terrible for you even if you workout for like an hour 6 days a week. Our bodies were meant for doing work and when they don't they suffer.

Plus even brief periods of light to moderate exercise throughout the day have been proven to increase concentration and productivity.

I could go on and on about the benefits of getting proper sleep as well, especially establishing and maintaining a regular sleep cycle but this post is too long already.

Where are you implying it doesn't matter? At your work place? When asking for a raise? When stating an opinion on the internet? What reports of horrific treatment towards women in the tech industry and on-line are you saying isn't relevant?

My sisters are both more insulted by the gender laws here than anything else they have experience so far.
Pretty sure one of them would snapquit and rage if she ever got a raise or promotion for gender reasons.

But on to more interesting topics...dat Carmack and his Lisp for VR...likey, likey (eventhough there's a perfectly fine Clojure for Unity project on github). Pretty sure getting Carmack to tinker with languages is a huge net positive

When you're a women is when sexism matters. Men aren't systematically discriminated against, especially white men.

I'm not saying we should about face and give women special treatment or consideration to try to balance inequality, I'm saying being a woman shouldn't matter to society in the way you're paid, selected for positions, or expectations in spousal relationships and I think there is strong evidence to suggest that it very clearly does matter (speaking from the US here).

Never seen that used before.

Quote:
A hot take is a journalism term derisively used to describe a "piece of deliberately provocative commentary that is based almost entirely on shallow moralizing" in response to a news story, "usually written on tight deadlines with little research or reporting, and even less thought".
Hmm doubt my views are based on shallow moralizing but if you can prove that i'm game.

I've never once said that I have an edge over investors but maybe its true.

I believe you may be scoffing at me here because you may think its not possible to do very well; investing solely in a field that one lives and breaths. I can assure you that is a mistake to believe, when the tech industry is a multi billion dollar piece of the investing pie.

What exactly makes an investor more valuable to you, than someone that lives in the specific industry that the investor has to get information about?

The "women face discrimination and harassment in the tech industry" i'm not disputing in any of my previous posts. I've asked questions for people to outline what exactly contradicts with my post. Asking when does it matter is questioning; that hiding one's gender does not provide significant benefit to the person in the case we started this discussion about.

I'm not surprised to see posters hopping on board with the mainstream view that women have it really tough by gender discrimination.

What exactly is sexist or gender discrimination? They are human terms that were developed to outline the problems the opposite sex faces from one gender or the other resulting by the persons' gender in society.
A very complicated equation that results in many different people being stereotyped into a role that may be perfectly fine for the majority but horrible for some. I am guilty of sometimes wondering why the men suicide rate is 4-5 times higher than females if this world favours men but I digress.
