That's awesome, man. Would love to hear any updates as the summer goes along.

Made me think of how I feel when I post in this forum.

I'm the mom, obviously.

thanks but yeah, codecademy is usually really beginner stuff. I'm strong with python, but there are like 10 ways to do everything and I think my way is usually toward the bottom when it comes to efficiency and elegance. I basically just hack my way through.

I don't mind buying a book but I was hoping for a rec from someone. I would even do a paid course if there were any good ones out there. There is one at my school but it's undergrad level and it's stupid expensive to take a course that won't count toward my degree.

sthief09,

Are you working alone? Do you have anyone who can review your code? You could buy an advanced book on python, if there exists. However it sounds like you aren't looking for resources on python, but rather if you are writing good code. If that's what you are looking for, I would generally try and read other people's code. Check out github and find some open source python code.

exercism.io is great for feedback and practice. don't be fooled by the simplicity of the problems. you can a learn a lot perfecting simple programs.

codereview stack exchange is also good.

What was your proposal?

One exhausting weekend and 5000 LOC later I've got a semi-functional, presentable app running that the friends I've shown it too have said they wished they had at their place. I said "Yea you've only seen what's working."

Last year when I took my advanced Java class I swore to god I'd never touch a JPanel again, now I'm considering sending Prof you know who an email and thanking him for the course. It saved my ass

even though this is exhausting and he's probably gonna tear it to pieces Wednesday I'm super proud of what I built in a weekend and it revitalized my passion for the subject, it's way more fun building things than doing pointless Lisp exercises in a classroom full of ****s I can't stand.

Is it common to upload tutorials to github? I recently worked through some React stuff and was thinking about basically writing up a little tutorial and uploading it as a reference for myself later.

I've seen quite a few that are essentially just a readme file so I guess the answer is yes. Was thinking about uploading a readme and the final code.

Had exam today for C++ Data structures class.

One of the problems was posted here like last week but modified a bit.
It was return the value in the array that occurs the most frequent and you are not allowed to modify the array or make another array.

I slipped up, forgot to set my int variable to zero in one of the loops so meh probably got 3/5 points on that question.
Seems to happen a lot, walk out test room and realize i missed something small like that

Well my homework assignment just got massively rejected by Company X. Didn't even merit a follow up discussion. Really hard to believe - I know good MVC principles and it was fine. There might be some things to nitpick about - but no way those are deal-breakers. I was actually super-proud of it.

I sent my submission to candybar to review. If anyone else who considers themselves a front-end JS architect wants to review, PM me.

I'm kinda devastated by this. I just don't get it. Honestly I wonder if they googled me and found out I'm 46 somehow (or maybe they found 2p2 - lol - good luck wading through 64k posts for something juicy). Obviously they'd never tell me that's the reason. The other thing is they showed it one developer. There are a million ways to skin a cat and maybe my method just didn't work at all for him. I asked for any details about what they didn't like about it, don't really expect a reply.

I swear when I was young and didn't know **** I never got turned down for a job. Now that I'm old, actually know stuff--on the latest cutting-edge web technologies no less--and honestly think I'm doing the best programming of my life - I have gotten rejected twice in a row.

hey, thanks for the advice. I'll check these sites out. I agree a lot about perfecting simple programs and that's exactly where I'm at. I know how to do stuff but want to learn to do the same stuff better.

Anyone ITT have experience handling streaming data/high data rate coming in through USB? I have a program that drops packets on occasion dealing with 4000 x ~1kB packets / second.

That really sucks suzzer, sorry to hear it.

There's a million stupid reasons a company will reject a candidate. I wouldn't stress to much about it.

suzzer, are you really that easy to find? Suppose you tried to find yourself with the information you have as an interviewer, would it be easy?

I ask because I'm genuinely curious. Even with my first name, last name, city of residence, phone number, I am virtually impossible to find. You'd have to know very particular things about me to find me.

The open source organization has built a C library that does network text and video over a distributed hash table (I don't know how that is really implemented). There are already programs built in C, Qt and several others that use this library to connect to the network. My proposal is to build an iOS application that will use it as well. First step is to write a 1 to 1 objective-C wrapper over that library, then use that wrapper to build the iOS app.

Once it's complete, a user can use the iOS app and join the network, to communicate with other users who use that same library. They don't have to use the same iOS app, but rather Qt or any other desktop application that is built.

Don't want to out my real name too easily, but if you guys are curious you can google for the organization and find what the organization is. There are some other cool projects too that build around that same core.

suzzer what is your take on age discrimination among programmers.

As someone that is young, my thought process is to typically I admire the old programmers and believe they probably know things that will take me years to learn and master.

I really don't understand how I read so much age discrimination among hiring on the web and it must go on for people to bring it up.

Like where is it trickling down from.
Is it Management, Interviewers, HR or maybe the older guys just cost more to hire?

I didn't think it was much of a thing. I'm starting to wonder. But I doubt Netflix knew I was 46. I didn't start programming until I was 29 so there's not much trail of me on the web before then.

Also I look like I'm still in my late 30s-ish. But with the other startup I flat out told them how old I was - basically because I knew I didn't want the job. But then I got myself all butthurt when they rejected me before I could reject them.

These are literally the only two times I've ever gotten this far in a programming interview and not gotten the job. Confidence definitely shaken.

I was having a lot of existential wrestling about it. Like Company X is probably my last shot for the big time, where I can plausibly pull off being young enough to still be a hot shot engineer. But where am I going to go from there when I'm 50? I guess management. Shudder.

I can probably hang where I'm at for a long time and basically force them to give me some work/life balance. Comfort or rut? Don't know.

I thought that's the whole point of LinkedIn, to make yourself marketable? If age is a concern, I wouldn't list places where you worked 2 decades ago.
