VirtualBox + Debian worked for me. FWIW I had several issues trying to get Ubuntu installed so I tried Debian and it installed fine on the first try. I upgraded to a 13" Macbook Pro not too long ago and I really like it.

New MBP comes out in like 14 days. Not sure if I should've waited or what. Saved $150 via student discount.

Have you used any of the beta builds yet? What's your impression of it so far?

I'm pretty sure I'm moving to Linux full-time once Win 10 is official.

What guarantee is there that I get into some amazing social network there? I'm somewhat of a wall-flower and feel uncomfortable talking about my working life with people. Besides, a ton of SV companies advertise down here. I'm not sure what that means, but it indicates a real talent vacuum, or their standards are unrealistically high.

Still waiting for phase 1 interview to be arranged or whatever is going to happen. As I said, I wouldn't turn the job down.

No I haven't. Our VS plugins won't work on Windows 8 or above. I haven't even used Windows 8 that much which is kind of funny since I was pretty involved with the development of Windows 8 drivers before Windows 8 was released. I just had a very narrow view of the OS.

I pretty much do the work I get paid for on Windows and do my private stuff on Linux. I am going to get a Windows 10 machine after the release of the first service pack though. I just have a lot of computers

People are commuting from SF to Netflix for the interesting work and good pay (basically the top of the industry in compensation). The culture is definitely not for everyone, and unless you're one of the top performers I can see the work life sucking a lot (I hear there is zero work life balance. My friend who works there says some people show up on New years day.).

Eh, the new MBP is a rip off. You are paying extra $$ of thinness and slower performance. I bought my rMBP 13inch last summer. If I had to do it over again, I would of gotten a 2012 macbook pro and upped the ram to 16 gigs with SSD. Only the older macbook pros are upgradable, anything after 2012 are soldered on. Anyways, it would of came out cheaper and faster if I had went down that route.

My last little exercise for Clojure is refactoring the poker bot. It's not exactly a steaming pile of ****, but it's not what I would call an engineering masterpiece.

For some odd reason, refactoring caused me to add 100 LOC, but it is so much better now.

Erm. Are you talking about the new MacBook? As in "MacBook Pro" without the word "Pro"?

As for the rest, agree.

There's no guarantee in life. I don't think anyone's saying, move now and just hope you fall into the right situation, just that if you find a better job in SV, you probably don't have a very good reason not to take it.

I thought the new mbp was about the same price as the older models.

Decided is rather not be another 1200 in debt, so called to cancel my order (they didn't have any in stock), and spent all night prepping my Ubuntu install for coding.

That was probably the most fun I've had on a desktop in a long time.

Wasn't sure how to name my github profile, something serious and professional or something I wouldn't mind sharing publicly.

Installing and briefly configuring everything for heroku, git/github, ssh, vim, and ruby/rails was pretty painless following guides. By the end of the night, had a local server running I could connect to and throw simple commands at. Too fun.

@Anais - too cool.

I wrote this command line tool to filter debug spews to filter out debug messages I am not concerned with (they just clutter things up). To make a long story shorter, got the same source code working with a gcc compile and a VS compile using C++ 11 compiler options. The gcc compiler has better compliance with c++ 11 than VS but the issues with VS were easy to overcome. Used Boost libs extensively. Archived on github. Eclipse and VS 13 provided easy to use interfaces to github. On to unit testing now. I haven't written a lot of unit tests but the concept is simple enough. And yes thinking about how I would do unit tests did influence me in how I wrote the tool.

Thanks. Yeah I'd definitely be looking at it as a 2-year sacrifice to help my career/boost my development as an enginer. But of course it could always turn into more.

They seem kinda weird about tele-commuting. Does your friend have any input on that?

Should switch statements in general be avoided in favor of mapped objects? The googles has no opinion. I've been doing maps but could see how they could be more confusing to a 3rd party - a switch is pretty explicit.

A code sample would clarify. But in general there's nothing wrong with switch statements. Repeated, similar switch statements are a code smell though.

I think we had this debate earlier.

Not sure if we reached consensus, but I believe the following was agreed upon:

* Some people's (including mine) personal opinion is switch is usually clearer
* Other people's personal opinion is mapped objects are usually clearer
* Consistency is good and using whatever is common in a given repo is probably the 'right' choice.

Edit: And yes, context is obviously important so I'm sure most of us would change our minds in some specific scenarios.

I guess in the last 2 weeks the programmers in my group decided to change to Java from the goofy c++ gaming engine they were using.

No more sprites!!

Also he's been really quiet, so much so that I think the others may have staged a coup. I'm way out of the loop.

Lol and they decided to use swing after all.

Hey guys I'm looking to get into product management. Obv this is a dev forum but I think like a dev and definitely respect developers' opinions.

I have financial analyst and business analyst backgrounds and recently completed a web dev bootcamp for some technical experience. I'm thinking its prob best to become more well rounded in all the aspects a PM touches on first, since PM is pretty competitive. It seems like working at a startup as a "PM" / hustler / analyst is best for this. Thoughts?

Also if anyone wants to hook me up with an associate product management position I'll take that as well.
