And since I know you guys are dying for an update, I failed in my goal to sleep in late but succeeded on the big breakfast. I replaced watching curling this morning with a trip to the driving range (the game I had PVR'd got spoiled on me so it wasn't really worth watching) but tonight Canada plays Norway in the first of the playoff games - so things are still looking good!

I designed my inventory and login screens for my project, they're pretty basic and other than the login I think look good.

I wrote a simple java program using swing that creates my inventory screens (just the visual part, haven't programmed behavior at all) to show my group leader how ****ing simple it is. I doubt that'll do anything though.

The lack of communication in my project is really discouraging. I feel we're gonna come up short again this week.

On this topic, when the company is just starting out and very small, is there any way to make a judgement about its future? Or is it just a "Im going along for the ride" type thing? Id love to do this, but I would also hate to be unemployed 6-12 months later again

That's the history of the founders.

Founders with really good connections and track history and quite literally get a couple million for an idea in the air.

They run lean, all money on payroll and build products.

Alright new question, how do I become one of these said founders?

If it would be that much of a problem for you to be unemployed 6-12 later, you honestly wouldn't love it. It's like looking at a poker table, seeing a guy with a huge pile of chips, and saying, "I'd love to have that pile, but I'd really hate to lose any of the money I came here with."

Becoming a founder is best done when you've figured out how to run a small business and have some capital.

Curling is just like hockey. If you aren't a ref or don't play professionally, you probably don't know the rules.

Well, these two videos are entertaining:

In all honesty unemployed is a fine outcome in this industry right now. You're in high demand so finding a new job isn't a big deal.

The ****ty times are when you have to decide if you stick through a rough time (especially without pay). It can be a pretty tough decision when there's a chance (but not certainty) of something like raising a lot of money.

Being a founder is all well and good, but unless you know the other people really well or really like the main goal of the company it's not that big of a deal. Being employee 5-15 is probably better in that you don't have as much of the huge upside (but you'll still do well if the company does well) but your risk is generally a lot lower.

Curling Update:

Both teams played really well. A couple of frustrating breaks on both sides (mostly because of ice issues), but Norway ended up winning it in the extra end.

Luckily curling uses a playoff format where after a round robin the first and second place teams play each other and the third and fourth teams play each other. Winner of the 1-2 game goes directly to the finals and the loser plays the winner of the 3-4 game.

So Canada still has a chance!

Yeah, more just I plan to head out west where its going to take a bit more money to be comfortable, so non working time may suck heavily.

Pretty much my ideal scenario is being one of the first couple of people in the company and theyre building something I care about. The first couple jobs for me (as I suspect is true for most) is on a bunch of garbage software that provides no joy when I make something work because I quite frankly dont care

Yea! I get to get scrum and jira training to do pseudo scrum mastering. Finally something marketable to put on a resume besides "support developers and schedule potlucks!"

DB Girl quit, which is whatever to me. Things went about as far south as can be with us two. Long story short, she was working under someone else for the past 6 months and things went pretty bad. Now that she's gone, everyone is open game about complaining to me about her and her work, but I stay blissfully ignorant to the situation and whatever she was working on.

I don't have all of the details, but I do know she was gun-ho about learning to use Java. Now that she's gone, someone has to take over her work and it isn't me. Apparently the company found someone who was willing to muck through everything, but get this: no one knows where the source files are. I was able to find two files and then I asked her manager where the rest of it is: "I don't know."

Okay... how many programs did she write: "Uh, at least 10, I guess."

Okay... where are the source files. "Just search 'Java' and I'm sure you'll find them all."

Okay... why the **** didn't you force her to use a VCS? "I don't know what that is."
But she does. I showed her how to use one because she had an unusual way of losing all of her work. Why didn't she continue using it? (Actually, I know the reason, and yeah, it's because she doesn't like me)

"I don't see what the big deal is."

WTF is wrong with you? Great, we hired someone else and now they have no ****ing clue how the system works, no one can give him the source files, and there is zero documentation. You don't think losing 6 months of work is a big deal?

"Well, the source files are in the program."

Believe it or not, this guy has a degree in computer engineering.

Anyone know anyone who's worked for Netflix? I may have something brewing with them. Not really too keen on moving back to the Bay Area though. I have a very comfortable, laid back, beach life where I'm at and I just bought a condo.

It would be fun to work for an industry disruptor though. I may do the weekend commute thing.

We've interviewed a couple of Netflix people. They were both very smart and seemed like great engineers. They seemed to like the projects that they got to work on but both echoed the rumors about their culture where you're always in danger of being fired.

In the end we couldn't land either of them because of salary expectation mismatch. Their engineering salaries seem to start at about 150k and anyone that's been there any length is making around 200k and that doesn't include any stock incentives.

Anais, how does Netflix work - can you fast forward at all? I know some streaming sites won't let you unless you've already watched the show.
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

Yeah, you can FF, but it's wonky and gives frame-oriented fast forwards. (On non-tablet/PC devices)

Most DVRs have an option to skip ahead 10, 15, or 30 seconds with one button press. That's usually perfect for skipping the opening theme song for shows that have them.

Binge watching would be vastly improved by skipping those instead of sitting thru it for the 50th time in a row.

Wouldn't consider anything but salesforce, especially because we do custom implementations and development for clients on the platform, so using it makes too much sense.

It is very important but it is pretty much a failed project.

I'm not an expert on Java by any means, but I'm pretty sure what I've seen isn't very good. The files I found are over 1,000 LOC and features this stuff:

Code:
"""INSERT INTO mytable VALUES
(""" + [1] + """),
(""" + [2] + """),
(""" + [3] + """),
...
(""" + [22] + """),
WHERE some_value = """ + [32] + """
AND other_value = """ + [55] + """...
After seeing that, I told the new guy he may just want to write everything from scratch.
