There is still the issue of crazy contacts. Some of what I got from posting there makes that craigslist ad look totally normal and reasonable. It is more frightening because these people should know better, if you go by the companies they work for and their LinkedIn profiles.

DaveT,

Could you elaborate? You posed on HN and got some crazy contacts? Like what?

He's referring to this post where someone on Craigslist offers barely better than minimum wage for a candidate with a long list of programming skills.

I'm guessing he's finding a fair amount of these types of posts on HN.

oh just straight cheap labor. I'm guessing that's because there are a lot of posters who reside outside the states. For example, I seen developers posting from Turkey and India, where I guess that kind of wage would make sense.

Well... there is one that disturbed be deeply, but since this was private conversation and there really is no way to describe why I was disturbed without knowing what the company does, I won't talk about that part. I'm not one to publicly smear companies and people.

I will say that they had a stack of 20 pieces of software (I counted). They wanted one dev since the other was leaving to go back to school. To boot: the project, which was "over half way done," had to be done in 3 weeks and maybe I would be offered full-time when it was done.

The person that contacted me wasn't like some nobody either. If you haven't heard his name, you certainly heard of the companies he worked for.

The other contacts are just strange ones across the board, like contacting me for senior roles, asking me to work on odd-ball tech stacks (apparently Clojure means I want to work on Fortran), and generally a bunch of stuff that clearly had no relevance to my background.

hmm interesting. I'm looking for an junior iOS job and if it means getting paid $12/hr, I would do it just for the experience. I don't have any apps out on the store yet however I'm hoping to one done by the end of next month.

Curious to see if I should post on there to see if I get any responses.

How is it even possible to have a stack that large?

I would really have to stretch my imagination to come up with a stack of > 10

Reaching 10 seems about normal with only 1 programming language. Could hit closer to 15 if you were to break down the components of certain things without trying.

Half of those are ops related tho.

Since we recently talked about proprietary software...I installed something today and it could be pretty cool. Adobe Edge Inspect. Basically you install a gratis app on each mobile device (Android or iOS) install the program on your dev machine (iirc only OS X, Windows) and a Chrome extension. All devices on the same network, you register them all with the program and then you do your webdeving as normal and stuff is live synced on all devices...so essentially as long as you have the hardware you get instant layout etc. testing on all devices.

Pretty nifty I'm sure this could be done with browsers and some scripting. I only looked at it because I wanted to get a click prototype onto multiple devices for doing usability testing on the actual devices but this seems pretty great to have while developing, too.

[Today was also the first time I was part of paper prototype based testing to see if a basic workflow makes sense and can be understood. Somewhat interesting experience...it's not something I'd do because I'm pretty sure creating paper prototypes would take me longer than creating other prototypes but if you can scribble/scetch well it's pretty good]

?

Windows developers are more used to dealing with spaces in filenames than any other platform developers, thanks to Microsoft's insistence on using spaces in system folders. One good way to make life difficult for Windows developers and users though is by abusing case-sensitivity.

Oh and I'm assuming somone will post in here once React Native is actually released. Been playng around with React, looks cool. Like the general model, hope I can use it to build prototypes for apps (I probably won't need much more so those may very well be the final apps).

Played around with Ionic as well, seems a lot stranger but I can build stuff with it right now. Since I have a bunch of other stuff to do I'll just wait it out but don't really want to wait >1 month either.

Macs are better at hiding it, but you can make life miserable for a mac user by abusing case sensitivity too.

For example, if you rename a file in Git just to change the case of some letters it can be a pain in the ass for someone that doens't realize what's happened.

At least it works, right? The problem is that Windows is case-insensitive so if you abuse case-sensitivity in another platform, it just breaks in Windows. Having two files that differ by case only is one example. For a while, git in windows also couldn't handle case-changing operations - not sure if they fixed it. So if your local branch has the same file as the remote, but they differed in case, pretty much all merge operations would break.

Macs are also case insensitive. It works 'most of the time', but sometimes it doesn't.

Wow, I did not know that! Just assumed based on its 'nix heritage that it must be case-sensitive.

For my money the biggest pain in the ass in Windows development is dealing with this stuff:

TEXT MACRO

String and TCHAR typedefs

String and TCHAR typedefs

Since the Win32 API documentation lists functions by their common names (for example, "SetWindowText"), all strings are given in terms of TCHARs. (The exception to this is Unicode-only APIs introduced in XP.) Here are the commonly-used typedefs that you will see in MSDN:

WCHAR
LPSTR
LPCSTR
LPWSTR
LPCWSTR
TCHAR
LPTSTR
LPCTSTR

There's a setting you can switch on macs to make them case sensitive, but a coworker told me that he tried it and everything just broke.

code review is going to drive me nuts. Just ran into this hot take:

Code:
formatter: function(d){
	var activities = [
		{displayValue: this.translate('New'), value:d},
		{displayValue: this.translate('None'), value:d},
		{displayValue: this.translate('On track'), value:d},
		{displayValue: this.translate('Some issues'), value:d},
		{displayValue: this.translate('Complete'), value:d}
	];
return activities[d];
}
thats um.. inventive.

What does this.translate do?

If d is the index in the activities array they want returned, why are they setting a property equal to value:d? So that the index can be returned with the object?
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

Well effectively this dude made his own switch statement by declaring 5 objects, 4 of which never get used every function call.
