That's how Apple does things. You're not buying a personal computer, you are buying an appliance.

While I sort of agree with this, I use Apple products because I need my tools to work consistently. While working on buggy software the last thing I want to deal with is a buggy systems and/or devices of my own. I don't have time for that.

The part that I agree with is the mindset. If someone has time or enjoys tinkering, cool. It's not me though. To each their own.

Looking for some feedback on a project I may undertake. I've been building an online ESL school using moodle and I'm at this point where the project isn't as appealing as compared to going the app route and integrating the two (at some point).

My app development skills are nonexistent so I've been looking for an easier solution to implement across mobile. So I've been looking into hybrid options like phonegap it's just I'm at a point where there are so many options I need to get more feedback before investing my time in one option. If the apps primary focus is a chat/IM where on my end I'm finding ways to game it, what is the simplest way to develop this? I know these arent all exactly competing but between services like sproutcore, phonegap, sencha how can I find a sweet spot that utilizes my design/css/html5 knowledge to easily add in extensions that add chat functionality and databases for profiles/chats/etc? I'd prefer the javascript to be as easy as possible with few errors and strong documentation/examples.

I'm not concerned about native, I see it as more cumbersome to learn since it needs to be available across all platforms and eventually tie in nicely to web. Any feedback is appreciated. I ruled out appgyver as everything has to run through their servers which I dont like them having that much control.

Also, I havent seen it mentioned here but i just found viziapps which claims to be an very easy to use builder for deployment without any coding, I think I'm going to start there and see its limitations while I continue to learn about my other options.

My old phone was cracked on both sides and I liked the idea of a bigger phone. I also wanted to get off my horrible cell plan and get an unlocked phone.

So I had lots of good reasons to upgrade my phone. But I'm generally happy with the iPhone so I really didn't seriously consider changing to an Android. It didn't help that my co-worker had the Nexus 4 (I think, whatever one of the 6+ sized Android phones are) and wasn't very happy with it.

Probably not a Nexus 4 - it's a 4" handset (well, 4.7") and top-tier for a 2 year old device, especially at the very low price.

Not that then. I just know I looked at it when the 6+ was announced to get a sense of the physical size.

I got the 6+ too and I'm sort of not sure if I like how big it is...
Once I can get rid of the wallet and everyone starts using apple pay, I'll be really happy.
One less thing to carry would be amazing but there is the driver's license still...

that would easily fit in any phone case. Im sure eventually you will be able to have your drivers license in your phone anyway

The government is really slow and kind of funny about things...
I know hospitals are still using XP with old software and who knows when they will get upgrades.

I got just a leather case for it, wish I thought ahead and got one with a pocket like you suggest.

dont need a pocket, just put it on the back of the phone before you put your case on. Its a pain if you have to show ID, but if you are old enough to not get carded for booze you need your ID like once a month if that

The closing paragraphs echo my thoughts.

I think it is pretty cool that they are trying something new, but I think the battle lines are already drawn regardless of what OS you prefer to develop on.

I had a flip phone until spring of 2013 when I dropped it one time too many and it snapped. I then used friends' discarded flip phones but didn't have long-lasting luck with them, finally having to surrender to a friend's old touch-screen in December of last year. It's still a glorified flip and I still text using abc def ghi keys on the screen.

I have now been accepted into a programming bootcamp and will have to feel out whether or not moving to a smartphone will be necessary.

This is a very silly statement.

Would you say the same about deciding which make of car you want to drive? Even if you were to stick with a single make of car your whole life, people turn 16 everyday. There will always be new users and the battlegrounds are constantly evolving and changing.

That makes sense, but I was taking his point to be more that the people using Linux/Mac probably aren't going to start choosing .NET. And that seems likely at this point.

That isn't what this move is about though. This isn't about trying to convince people who are entrenched in another ecosystem. Visual Studio doesn't run on Linux or Mac and won't for quite a while. This is about acknowledgement that we live in a cross-platform world and developer tools need to work across platforms to deliver the best experience. The developer's platform may not be the same as the server platform to which software may be deployed, or the end-user's platform on which client software may run. We live in a world where a developer uses Windows to develop a web service to run on Linux and to develop client software that runs on iOS and Android devices and consumes this service.
