lol my C++ professor included the source code for his grading program in our projects. You can change one value and give yourself whatever grade you want. Tell him?

first i gotta make sure this lame hack actually works. basically he has an output of what tests passed/didn't pass, and a percent grade. Then he takes the printed output (which contains your name, grade, etc.) as an argument for his encoding function that prints out a code you're supposed to copy paste in his drop box.

seems like really lazy coding to me

Be really careful. Just changing your grade "to see if it works" could be enough to get you kicked out in a worst case scenario (vindictive humiliated professor).

It actually doesn't rain that much in Seattle. Something like 35in per year compared to Houston where I live at 50in + per year iirc. Though, percentage of sunshine of all possible hours I believe is not that great.

As someone that use to write automarking scripts:

1. The majority of the time you won't get in trouble for playing around, as long as you follow up quickly about it. So if you try it late at night, make sure you follow up by the next morning. And, of course, there's always the risk you have a dumbass involved that takes it way too seriously.

2. Taking advantage of it is a bad idea. It was relatively common for me to have bugs in the marking script when the assignment was first posted. It didn't need to be robust then and **** happens. Not to mention for non-trivial assignments its actually really hard to be completely robust for all sorts of crazy errors that people can generate.

If it was me and I was reasonably certain it was a bad bug I'd tell the prof in an asking sort of way w/o trying anything on computer servers that you might get in trouble for.

Summer, from June 1 thru at least mid September not much rain, long hours of daylight. Around summer solstice daybreak is starting at 5:00 AM with sunset between 9:30 and 10:00 PM. Lots of really dry and sunny weather. Mount Rainier is spectacular.

The really rainy period starts in November and continues through March. It is rainy and as you'd expect daylight hour period gets really short. Not much snow in the Puget Sound area even though it is pretty far north in continental US. I prefer the weather other places (like California).

Yes when it gets dark at 4:30 in the winter, you're going to lose a lot of sunshine.

I apologize in advance for the tl;dr in tow. Wee bit of steaming but followed up with a real question. Or two.

A bit over a week ago, I've terminated my last contract prematurely (probation periods are for both parties after all.) First time ever in my career that I've done that.
The most neutral and brief summary that I can muster as of to the reason behind that is that the project and I just didn't fit well together.

So having taken the past week semi-off to mull things, I think I am basically done with the being-a-contractor-in-the-corporate-realm route for now and would much rather be a - for the lack of a better term - more "pure" freelancer taking odd jobs here and there instead; part-time exclusively except for very, very limited periods of time.

I actually had an excellent first interview a day after I walked. Well, technically the second round but they skipped the first after seeing my resume.
They loved me and effectively told me on the spot I'm in the final round. Yay, right? Except the role was advertised as full-time position and I am really hesitant to take such a deal right now.
That sort of scared me as I wasn't sure if I'd just yet again succumb to a juicy offer and then end up being miserable in a year's time.
I guess that made me real skittish (consciously or subconsciously - difficult to tell) in the final round and I just ended up straight out stating I'd very much prefer a 60-80% deal than full time. They passed on that and did not offer the position to me. Fair enough.

The long-winded approach from above brings me to the question I actually want to ask.
Do any of you guys do your work via freelancing sites (such as odesk, freelance, etc)? If so, which one(s) would you recommend focusing on? Or are they all just pure crap and there is a much better way to go about it?

Anyone here got experience with ASP.net? Our website is starting to crawl to a slow, too much traffic and not utilising any caching. We're moving the SQL database to a new dedicated server to relieve some pressure but I still need to add caching.

For the life of me, I just can't figure out how to do it and am on the verge of writing my own caching.

I have a webusercontrol with public properties such as "SelectedMenuID". I am bashing my head against a brick wall trying to get these controls to cache based on these public properties. It works fine when I explicitly set the property, but not when I dynamically set it:

The answer to this depends very much on what type of freelancing work you want to do.

You can put the KeePass-DB in an owncloud and sync it...if you want to do that is another question.

I'd rather go with KeePassX if I'd start now. I def. want to improve my setup but have been to lazy for a while.

the, erm, "hacking"...[which was probably similar LOL]:

"Last year, one of 4chan's users started a group effort to create a fake Apple ad that claimed a new update in the iOS 7 operating system would make iPhones waterproof. Within a few hours, a sleek fake ad using Apple's font style, colors and graphics was created and spread through social media."

OK...frist, you can't DO valid moisture measurements without a couple of conductors sticking out of the iphone, then tied internally to an Op Amp
[which handles crap that transistors and vacuum tubes used to do]. This then ties to the phone's CPU.
It's a HARDWARE upgrade, not a SOFTWARE upgrade.

Sigh, what can I say, we're raising a nation of technically illiterate chucklef***s...

OwnCloud + SSL + some sort of crypto + whatever server you trust.

There doesn't seem to be a good way to install VMWare Tools, which is a bummer, whereas they have a VirtualBox appliance with guest additions installed - so maybe I'll do this in VirtualBox instead.

On another note, has anyone compared VirtualBox against VMWare recently? I'd like to migrate to VirtualBox if performance/stability were comparable. Last time I used VirtualBox, it seemed to be quite buggy and not suitable for doing anything important, but that was many years ago.

I don't see anything interesting about ArchLinux or pacman - they seem like Debian/Ubuntu.

I'm not interested in NixOS as a replacement for a standard linux distribution - Ubuntu is fine for that - I'm interested in it as a replacement for Puppet/Chef/Ansible type of infrastructure automation tool.

Edit: Or not even as a tool per se, but rather as a source of inspiration.

VirtualBox works fine for everything I need. Mostly emergency Windows 7 for strange tools (German tax tool FU) and obviously the vegrant testboxes etc.

Performance supposedly still behind VMWare from what I've read but it's good enough for everything I've wanted so far. 3D-Windows stuff/gaming is probably the area it's kind of sucky in but who needs that

Arch is more up to date/bleeding edge by default. Pacman looks pretty cool at first glance. I'm too lazy to ever switch from Xubuntu though.

AFAIK especially if you use Chef far and away the most prebuilt boxes are Ubuntu based. I use the 64 bit Ubuntu basebox for pretty much everything.
