hey everyone. I'm searching for some volunteers to help with my research on international software development teams and am wondering if anyone here has any experience working in multicultural project teams?

would be cool if you could send me a PM and take 10 mins or so to fill out a questionnaire.

Why don't you make a thread? Check with the mods first, but to me I would learn enough reading other's responses to not consider it spamming.

Yeah, I think it would be interesting too.

Yes, I'd be interested to see that as well.

I feel I should know the answer to this question, does anyone know the best solution?

Its been awhile since I've done modelling but my first instinct is that you shouldn't do the circular reference.

A couple of options:

1. Remove currentVersion from ArcadeGame and put isCurrent on the version table. You could maybe just use the convention that the latest version is the current one and maybe add isDeprecated (or whatever) to handle the rare cases where you'll want to go back to a previous version.

2. Create a new table that keeps track of the current version for each game.

Edit: Either way I think the 'mistake' is having currentVersion in the game table.

Edit2: Thinking about it more I think I like Option 2 the best. It seems much cleaner and easier to maintain. You can insert a new version without any problems and then promote it to the current version as a separate transaction.

You can also structure the version/game table so that you track the dates that versions become current. It's pretty easy to add and it could be useful information.

I generally hate overwriting information in a database so a link table could be a good way to preserve the history of a game's versions.

I think you're right, thanks! Think I'll be going for your 2nd suggestion.

I don't have experience with that yet but if you wait about a week I'll let you know how it goes

got mod permission to start a thread about my topic, sent a draft to one of the mods waiting approval and also have to request approval from supervisors as to what additional information from prior research I can share.

looking forward to seeing some responses and the ensuing discussion

You may also recommend some good books/blogs on Android programming. I have read "Hello, Android", which was a good introduction, but I think I want something else.

I have a MSc in Stats so I have had a decent amount of CS subjects. I think I want to shift my career towards something, that involves a bit more coding/scripting and less staring at the data. At work I currently tend to enjoy things like writing scripts to scrape data/automate something/build a stat model. I don't enjoy things like writing a report or tasks like "just stare at the data and see what useful can you get out of it". /Enf of rant.

I've been reading "Professional Android 4 App Development" and "Programming Android, 2nd Edition". I've heard good things about "The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development" and I plan to pick it up.

Besides books, I've found the Android developer site to be a good reference. This blog post has a ton of links to Android information.

I've worked for a couple large corporations. A lot of that – especially the lack of documentation and key developer getting hit by a bus stuff rings true. Having said that though, in my experience I still prefer the large corporations to boring small companies that just get **** done the right way. I thrive on the chaos and pressure. Although talk to me in a couple of years, I may be ready to go back to a smaller company.

The one thing I've never done is work for a high-pressure startup doing real work. I worked for a psycho boss at a startup that I'm pretty sure only existed to steal money. That sucked.

I swear I read something almost exactly like that not too long ago from someone else at Microsoft. One of the most memorable claims from that other post was that Powershell exists specifically because the people behind it couldn't improve Windows Command Prompt without treading on some other team's turf and pissing them off...

Lack of code comments is a non issue.

Lack of code reviews is terrible

Lots of effort directed at code maintenance isn't surprising at all. It is amazing to me though that at least some companies put up with processes that are terrible.

Former Microsoft employees have told me the environment is very political. So yeah what he says about the managers is probably very accurate.

Good programmers comment their code when necessary. There's no such thing as good completely uncommented code imo.

On Stud:
I think 2 pair is a strong hand.
