A few years back I posted something in the marketplace with the same type of request for Java programming and a student going for his masters in CS was able to help me out. Charged something pretty cheap like 20/hr and I learned a lot during that time frame. I'd suggest doing the same and just making sure the guy you hire knows his ****.

skier,
While I am not sure your level, I have thought it would be nice to do something like code reviews... Obviously standards are different, but it is nice for beginning contractors to get outside opinions on their work. I mean overall, our program is making significant progress but it would help to avoid having problems where six months from now I am thinking what the hell was this idiot doing about my own code...

Interestingly, my employer is doing 1099s this month and I just got an e-mail asking for my full address and SSN ... Anyone else think this is a LOL bad idea? I

lol, I would not send that by email. They can get it from me in writing or go look it up because HR should already have it anyway.

Yeah I ended up making a phone call, just wondering if I was being paranoid or justified... No HR here unfortunately its small ass company but its decent job that I actually like and experience on my resume.

TBH, I really don't think you need to pay for this. There are a ton of dedi programming forums around and some great sites like stackexchange which are full of people who will happily give you feedback for free.... you could just post your code with an explanation and questions as to where you could improve. I bet if you googled around a bit you would find some communities dedicated to code reviews.

Another good way to learn is to get involved with some open source projects... have a look at GitHub... most of these will enforce daily rigourous coding standards.

(On the other side, if you do want private coaching, then there are plenty of people who would offer it, but do check their portfolio).

I've given "get started" programming coaching to quite a few people, both online and back when I was in uni and fellow students simply didn't get it. never charged, and doubt I ever would - it's just fun to speak with someone who's interested for a few hours and satisfying when the progress.

you can of course make a thread here too just like you would a poker hand you're unsure about - post your program or section of, and explain where you're having trouble understanding.

Cheers guys can't wait to see it featured, hope it's a good review or I'll look like an idiot but the writer sounded very positive Might also be a tiny box with 5 lines in it, who knows. No idea will be interesting to see when it's out.

I tiny box with 5 lines is more than I have ever achieved in a magazine.

We're being hammered right now:
http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3512313
(such an amazing HTML5 game though)

CPU is maxing out at 100% lol. It's a page that doesn't have much caching (the stats are all cached thank god) but it's still pretty lightweight, HN gets a ridic volume of traffic. I guess it's time to upgrade

Is there any "quick questions" thread in this forum, sort of like a simple hand checkup in strategy forums? I'm having a small issue and don't think it's worthy of a thread.

Font page of HN!! Another big congrats. I understand if you don't want to give this info out, but would be interested to know how much traffic HN generates for a front page link?

There's quite a few articles where they discuss the impact of HN traffic. Here's CmdrTaco's post on the subject: http://cmdrtaco.net/2011/10/then-alo...e-hacker-news/

Code:
if (letter == "a") {
     System.out.println("The uppercase equivalent of " + letter + " is " + upper);
     }
but changed it to

Code:
if (letter.equals("a")) {
     System.out.println("The uppercase equivalent of " + letter + " is " + upper);
     }
and it worked like a charm.

I also had a question about being able to use a-z instead of just a (and subsequently 25 more else if statements) but just gave up and did all the statements.

Just to clarify, this is my 2nd java project ever and so I'm sure there are easier shortcuts to do this, I'm just unaware of them.

Yeah sure, every time we've made it up there we get around 10,000 more visitors than we would expect otherwise. The influence lasts around 3 days (the 10k is total extra visitors over that 3 day period).

It has a huge impact on Tweets, you generally get a ton of those, as well as people linking to you on blogs.

The HN visits don't convert well into sales, but are good for getting your name out there. Also it can generate interesting leads by email.

The one that just went up about that game last night though seems to be going a lot further than the others, had around 10,000 more visitors than we would expect in just 16 hours. I think it's more popular because it's visual and less heavy than the others which were mainly blog posts.

I wouldn't ever rely on HN for acquiring customers unless they are your target audience.

I'm pretty sure a-z and A-Z are contiguous so you could go if letter>=a && letter<=z upper = offset + (letter - a);
where offset is the index of A. In other situations you can use an array to store the output (ie array[a] = A) and use that instead of if then statements.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll probably do a bit of everything. I'm not just starting out though. Rather I'm curious if my solution for aligned memory is best, or if my design to avoid polymorphism is ideal, and so on.

This is because strings are objects/reference types in Java so they may contain the same characters but they are two different objects and == compares their references and since they point to different objects the comparison will always evaluate to false.

Apparently this is true of Integer objects as well: http://www.javablogging.com/autoboxi...-numbers-with/

I haven't used Java much, but I know this because Python has similar behavior when it comes to "is" vs "==" (though in Python "==" is the one you're supposed to use):

Code:
a = 10000
b = 10000

a is b # this is false

a == b # this is true

Thanks for sharing. Doesn't surprise me that 1000s of visitors from HN doesn't convert well to sales, I would imagine the average time spent on the site is pretty small as well (if I constitute an average HN reader), but I would imagine its pretty valuable as far as getting your company name out there.
