Vista is stable and so is XP. Don't choose Vista if you have less than 2 GB RAM.

Not enough information is given for anybody to decide what OS you should choose.

OR You could just do what I did and get a Macbook Pro 17'' obv and just run XP through parallels. Its the best of both worlds imo

Depends on how much RAM you're getting; 4GB would be wasted on XP.

I have Vista on my main PC (4GB RAM) and XP on laptop (2GB RAM)

Fair and balanced answer:
Vista has a whole new Bunch of Features(2 examples: can adress more memory/ has the aero GUI). If you know. you want one of these features, then go for it.

Otherwise get XP.

My personal view:

Avoid Vista at all costs and get XP professional.

u should know that there are games out and will come out which only run under vista

if its only used for entertainment purposes i vote vista, its quite neat, has nice soundeffects like when a message box pops up, the progress bars look very good, the wallpapers are awesome and sometimes if i plug in my cardreader the whole system restarts.

Other than a few Microsoft game studios titles I really can't see any new games going this route. PC gaming is a small enough market already without crippling your sales by making a game Vista only.

as it seems and what i know, directx10 will only be available on vista. heard some technobabbel about the multiple cpu core support in vista.
they say gta IV for pc will also need vista.

You might well be right with GTA, Microsoft probably paid Rockstar a ton to make it Vista only. It's not like they are short of sales overall. I remember there was talk of Bioshock being Vista only a while back, but that came to nothing.

Certainly you are right about DX10 being Vista only, but this has always seemed like a reason for developers to not use DX10 to me, more than a reason to upgrade.

Ya well its not like they can just NOT use DirectX, even if Microsoft is being pricks about it. What are they gonna do design in the old as dirt OpenGL?

I would recommend vista for anyone who isn't planning on playing poker.

Vista makes a lot of things much easier as well as having many new features, but it just isn't stable or reliable enough yet for me to recommend it for a poker setup.

I've been using Vista on my new laptop for 4 months now. Have been 4 tabling LHE on Cake and Absolute with no problems.

I like Vista better so far.

I ordered vista cuz his comp isnt for poker and a lot of things just seemed to point to vista being better for his needs. I got the 64 bit one cuz I read some stuff about it processing data better or some ****. I only got 2 gigs of ram though so Im thinking I need to buy 2 gigs more when he gets it. Anyone have any tips on what I can do to maximize the potential that the 64 bit version has?

Yes def get the extra 2gb for 4 total. 64bit will be a more stable operating system on that system, general system functions like IE, windows explorer, etc will work much better. But you need to put no less than 4gb in the machine, its pretty cheap tho. Make sure to buy a pair of sticks, not two singles. Sometimes referred to as a kit.

I liked XP and find aspects of Vista frustrating, but for editing movies and burning DVD's Vista is far better.
