If I were to hole-punch the rfid chip out of my credit card, then when I swipe it, would the machine still tell me to insert the chip? Or would it no longer know that my card is (was) a chip card?

I ask because I've read about people inserting a device in those slots that reads people's chips and steals their card #'s. Also about the potential for someone a few feet away to scan it through your pocket if your wallet isn't metal.

I mean, it's not something I'm very worried about, but hole-punching would be an effortless security measure, provided it doesn't ruin my card's functionality.

It's not tinfoil hat stuff because there have been plenty of actual cases of this happening in stores recently. It was probably on Slashdot or Ycombinator that I read about this. The thief inserts the device while making a checkout of their own, then they can steal the #'s of everyone behind them in line and however many people insert their chips until someone notices something wrong (like their card getting stuck).

When a few of my local stores were transitioning to chip readers I swiped my card by accident. The reader identified it had a chip and asked me to insert it to read.

So I'm pretty sure removing the chip would be -EV.

If you're worried about it get something like this:

Most RFID-enabled credit cards are heavily marketed as capable of being used wirelessly. They have names that imply wireless payment: PayPass, Blink, PayWave, Express Pay, and so on. Usually they bear a little RFID/contactless payment logo.

Hint: The new little golden metallic square on your new credit card does not indicate RFID.

Right, but my question is whether the reader will still identify that if the chip is physically removed. Of course if I can't get a definite answer to that, it would be -EV to remove the chip. I'm too far from expiration to experiment.

That wouldn't protect me from the threat I'm discussing, namely inserting the chip into a compromised reader when making a payment. If someone before me stuck a device into the reader, my card info will be stolen.

I stand corrected, but the threat I discussed applies nonetheless. The article I read was talking about chip cards (which I thought were automatically rfid cards). I have a plain chip card.

These are also for the mag stripe on your card, shouldn't have to worry about it at busy places.
