Hey all, last 2 weeks my computer has begun to slow down occasionally during games, namely overwatch/dota 2 and sometimes apex legends.

Symptoms: My mouse will continue the movement it was doing for half a second or just freeze up, the whole computer will also drastically slow down for half a second. I suspected high cpu temps (i have a 1070 ti) after watching resource monitor.

I checked the inside of the my computer and the connections seem fine and the aftermarket fan on the cpu seems like it's still running. I didn't have this problem the first 11 months I had the system but have been transporting it back and forth between locations about 10 times this year.

Any ideas on a fix? I'm right in assuming it's the CPU correct?

This is the computer at rest:

I'm assuming using that much memory with only firefox and chrome open is normal?

those usage values don't seem out of whack to me. chrome and firefox tabs take up a decent chunk of ram per tab so getting to 7gb with just that isn't unheard of. your cpu temps seem ok too. also, your cpu running at 100% isn't in itself something to be concerned about.

maybe post a dxdiag? i'd put it on pastebin so this thread doesn't get super long. https://pastebin.com/ search for dxdiag, hit save all information, and post that there then give us the pastebin link.

Try using CPU-Z to see if your core speed is jumping up and down, at load and at idle and most importantly when it is freezing/slowing down. This part of your post:

Symptoms: My mouse will continue the movement it was doing for half a second or just freeze up, the whole computer will also drastically slow down for half a second. I suspected high cpu temps (i have a 1070 ti) after watching resource monitor.

is imo indicative of a intel speedstep EIST or a windows power management setting. The other part of your post indicates a HDD that is fragmented or just having normal growing pains and fragmentation after the first few months. But I'm assuming you're using an SSD for games on your operating system drive, unless you're setting up steam on a secondary HDD or something.

Try setting windows power settings to balanced, see if it helps. Then try turning off speedstep in your motherboard settings (I'd be surprised if it wasn't a speedstep issue, if your cpu really is hiccuping on frequent occasions.)

You'll burn more power though.

It sounds like you might have picked up something from a weird website. Considering that you haven't had those issues before.
