Just on setting up my new PC, have norton 360 v3.0, can anyone give me any advice on what services I dont want as may slow down my computer? Or should I just do the lot?

-AV
-Anti spyware
-Botnet protection
-Norton Indetity Safe
-Norton safe web
-Firewall protection
-Network protection
-PC Tuneup
-Automated backup and restore
-Norton Browser protection

Any hints would be much appreciated as I want my new pc to run as smoothly as poss, and whilst the salesman told me the new norton is much leaner than in the past.. still got my doubts!!

edit: ok I must be dumb, I must have not realised you have to pay a renewal fee each year, What a joke! Symantec must be raking it in. Is this the case with all AV's? Bar free ones like Avira.

If you want to use Norton for a year, I'd go for AV, Antispyware and firewall and thats it.

would you actually expect them to put a significant strain on the system though? I got a intel core 2 quad q8300 2.5ghz/4mb 4gbRAM - would you still suggest taking some things out?

Just playing about with it now and the identity safe thing seems like a load of rubbish, although it does say it tells you if youre accessing an 'unsecure' website so I guess best to leave it on?

The salesman who sold you Norton boasted about its improvements? I'm in shock.

The fact is that Norton is an inferior product. It is invasive. It uses more resources than Avira. It will hassle you more than Avira. It's more expensive than Avira. And on top of all that, its detection rates are still lower than Avira.

Just uninstall that Norton and install something useful instead, don't want you posting here in few weeks with a Hi-jack log full of spywares

Comodo free firewall+ antivirus can be an alternative too.

looks like I made a bad decision! oh well will just use this for a year as I've already paid for it and not going to pay another years membership on avira. surprised norton dominates the market so much then if it isn't the best, but I guess AV isn't something many people look into much, they just pick which one they get offered when getting their computer!

Avira personal is free. Avira professional is not.

Well , see it for yourself since nobody seems to convince you (unless you work few years in an IT support department and you'll know this) :

when people were suggesting avira I assumed they meant a version which you pay for, didnt say I disagreed

We are not debating about the price here : only performance.

Lol good analogy. I was just under the presumption that I'd imagine most are which is that the AV's you pay for are more effective than a one you can download for free. Skimmed through your article link was quite interesting actually. Looks like the choice I went with is kinda on the wrong side of the graph!

Got another random question, the logs to which the instructions are stickied I know are for checking to see if you have a virus, but if I want to run some once I have finished setting up my new pc to see if I've got too much of one thing, or certain programs running that I dont realise, is it ok to run them and post the results for feedback? is there any log(s) in particular I should go for?

would just be good to get some advice of some of you guys on how the system looks

Plenty of posters go through the Malware sticky thinking they might be infected. Find out they are not and end up getting advice on removing unnecessary programs that are just taking up resources. I see no problem in posting those logs.

What you can also do is look at these videos from funkyworms.

My new computer came with a 60 day trial of norton and after the trial I downloaded MS security essentials and pc tools essential and my computer runs much faster.
