My laptops are being jerks to my external HD My laptops are being jerks to my external HD

I have a usb external hd that worked just fine on my ubuntu laptop for months. All of a sudden yesterday the system wouldn't recognize the hd at all when I plugged it in. I also have a windows 10 system, so I tried plugging it into that and it said "you need to format the disk in order to use it."

WTF happened? Formatting would erase all the data on it right? I really don't want to do that because I have some important **** on there.

Yes, don't format it unless you want to lose everything.

Is it plugged through a USB hub? Try connecting it directly to a port on the laptop instead. Also try disconnecting all other USB devices. Conflicts are a frequent cause of this issue with external drives and chances are the drive could be fine.

If you have no joy with that consider taking it to someone if you really can't afford to lose the data.

And in future remember the rule that you should have three copies of anything important, in at least two different locations.

You can try test disk to recover the partition table, but your data may very well be toast.

It's always been connected directly to the machine. When the problem started, there was another usb drive plugged in, but not now and the problem persists.
