Looking to get a hardware network appliance for securing my home network. I saw the SonicWall TZ300 ( https://www.sonicwall.com/products/tz300/ ) and it looked like product that offers a lot of protection (firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware inspection, etc.), however quite expensive (~$700 with the 2 year update plan).

My first question: Do you guys think this is overkill? I'm happy to pay for the best protection I can get but don't want to waste money.

Second question: I have a 300 Mbps internet connection, do you think I would face speed throttles when using Anti-malware inspection since its throughput on this device is only 100 Mbps? I'm not sure if I'm ever actually downloading from any host at that speed.

Appreciate any help and advice on the subject, thank you!

Get opinions from others as well, but my thoughts are that that is not necessary for home.

Instead, just get a router with firewall built in, disable all remote access and UPnP, and keep on top of updates (like this vulnerability affecting lots of Netgear routers).

Then follow good security practices on your individual devices.

Edit:
If you're tele-working and require remote access to company services, the company should provide you with a solution for that that the IT department approves and configures.

Why do you think you need the best protection money can get? Do you have some particular security issues that need resolved, like hosting a website from your home? Or are you just being extra paranoid for no reason?

I have an older model sonicwall for my business and have deployed them effectively for compliance businesses for years. Do you have actual compliance requirements or just have a lot to lose?

Network appliances shouldn't really be deployed by someone who can't answer these question themselves imo but you can learn more about sonicwall through training videos and materials at firewalls.com

Cisco also makes good applicances as well but I think if you actually have the need you're better off hiring a professional with experience to setup and/or manage this. That being said my home network is an expensive soho router and knowledge of what to keep on a home network
