A memory leak is essentially when a program puts something in memory and then doesn't release it back to the Operating System when it's done with that chunk of memory. So you end up with all of the computers memory being taken up by stuff no one can use, which then slows everything else down as the computer has to start using really slow disc memory instead of faster system memory.
