Not very knowledgeable on this type of stuff so want to make sure i buy the right one for what i need. Just for poker 8-12 tabling while having space for lobbies on the side. My graphics card on my laptop is not the best, GeForce GTX 1050. Been looking at resolutions of 2560x1440 and the ultra wide 3440x1440

The 2 monitors i have in mind are the Asus VG32VQ or the MSI MAG341CQ

Leaning towards the ultra wide since it would give me more space but I am worried about the brightness only being 250 cd/m2 and the stand it comes with looks much worse. It is also only has 100hz but don't even think my laptop would run higher anyways?

Any suggestions would be great, Thanks for the help!

GTX 1050 is plenty for non-gaming use at those resolutions. Running off your laptop may or may not allow higher than 60Hz refresh rate. That's mainly an issue for gaming but is a bit smoother in overall use too. 60Hz is the standard for general use and would be fine for poker. Both of those are gaming targeted monitors so you're paying extra for features that you probably won't be using.
I have one of these, colors aren't as good as IPS but lot's of screen real estate for the price. This is 3840x2160.

You could also do a 32 or 27 inch 2560x1440 panel or non gaming targeted ultrawide to save a couple hundred bucks (assuming you're not gaming and looking for gamer specific features).

I've never used or seen this monitor in the flesh, but the specs and price seem good. Check reviews if you get serious about it.

I have an older version of this monitor (2711) as my secondary. Dell Ultrasharps are quality monitors with good color and stands. This is solidly a business targeted monitor, you can game on it but it won't have any gamer specific features.

You can snag an IPS 3440x1440 screen that does 60Hz for $450 (maybe less if you find a sale).

I'd steer clear of 2560x1080 screens. Costs are lower but you don't have a ton of real estate/pixel density to work with.

Thanks for the info, Ya was looking for anything 30 inch or higher and a min of 2560x1440 resolution, figured that would do the job i need it for.

The brightness though, Is it nothing to worry about being only 250? Or should i be looking for higher?

can go for a cheap 4k tv if you can fit it on your desk, I got a 43 inch one for <200$. these are much better value than high res monitors and you get decent quality IPS panels for that money.
perfectly fine for poker, not so much for fast paced games like shooters
just make sure it's got 1 hdmi 2.0 port, your gpu supports it
otherwise you won't get smooth 60hz , you'l go mad eventually if you're forced to run 30hz refresh (eye strain, headaches)

I see you've mentioned brightness, 250 is only a problem if you are in a very well light room, usually with sun shining directly on the screen from the sides or back or if the panel is particularly glossy (imagine your phone or tablet). tvs and most monitors that don't have a touchscreen are usually matte these days

I wanted to go with a 4k but i do not think my graphics card will support higher then 30hz on it that is why i am looking at 2560x1440 monitors.

Thanks for the info on the brightness, Shouldn't be a problem then

nvidia cards of that generation support 4k 60Hz through both display port and hdmi 2.0. Even the gt 1030 does. Tv must have one 2.0 port as well. 2019 and later models usually do. They have 2 or 3 total hdmi ports, one of which is 2.0

edit: just noticed you said laptop gpu. Ye sadly, these don't. There are few exceptions but most do not.

I'd just like to say, tables on stars tile perfectly on 1920x1200. You need that bit of extra vertical resolution. These are mainly business displays and you can find them refurbished for cheapo. They're usually higher quality panels than budget consumer ones as well.

Hello,

Im also looking to upgrade my monitor, looking at similar models as OP.
My question is tho, should I get curved or flat ~31'' monitor? I wonder if i wont be disappointed with curved monitor for playing poker, as i always used flat ones(up to 27'' tho)

I have a flat 30" monitor - I'd suggest flat is fine.

Curved monitors might make sense if they are substantially wider.

I've had a curved 34" 21:9 monitor for a couple months. I've pretty much gotten used to the curve. Looks good gaming, desktop/reading is fine (depending on the website I may snap it to only use half the monitor for shorter text lines. While working from home, I find that I tend to treat it like 2 1720x1440 monitors with no bezel in between. I still have a secondary monitor set up as 1440x2560 that I keep Slack and Outlook on. Outlook on a portrait mode screen works really nicely.
I think that with ultra wide aspect ratio models the curve is probably the way to go. Haven't used a 16:9/16:10 curved panel but curve might still be nice above 30".

Apprarently you can still go with 4k screen and reduce the resolution to 1600 or 1440. 4k is cheaper and will also future proof you.

Does it not cause eye strain if you sit so close to a 43 inch to play poker?

surprisingly no, but your mileage will vary
used to get way worse eye strain from the previous TN panel I was using, but this one, even tho it's literally the cheapest IPS chinese TV I could find, doesn't affect me
if you know yourself to have sensitive eyes, look for a panel that doesn't use PWM
it's backlight strobing and you can see it on camera sometimes, even if it's not apparent IRL
there's low freq PWM, which tends to affect sensitive people and cause eye strain and headaches, high freq is pretty safe and the high quality panels don't use it al all

i have a curved 27" and a flat 4k 55", had i spent more time with the curved before i got the other, it would have been curved too. its a slight difference on the smaller screen imo, but its noticeable and i do like it more.

i also think the hz hype is overblown at the top end, and i was a pretty competitive gamer for many years.
