Hmmmmm....what day was yesterday?

Okay, it was Tuesday.

Clarification, it was the SECOND Tuesday of the month.

Is there a question in there somewhere?

Yes. Do you want me to?

I was asking, in a roundabout way, why he posted the link. He could have been suggesting the monitor or he could have been asking for others' opinions on it.

Does HTTPS increase traffic load on server?
I have seen some sites that have HTTPS enabled on the whole site, not just on logging / payment stuff.

So I guess the NC thread in CTH should be treated with more seriousness than NC threads in other sections?

By the way, did you warn sba when he suggested google might be in order in his response to me?
11-13-2014 , 12:51 PM
Correct.

I've googled looking for an answer, but I haven't come across a good, in plain english explanation yet.

Will someone tell me the steps I need to take to install an update that has failed for a Win 8.1 machine?

Last edited by Doc T River; 11-13-2014 at 03:03 PM. Reason: My Win 8.1's perfect record on updates has ended.

iirc,

reboot, then rerun the update thing

I don't remember very well, I tried to block out all my windows 8.x days

This laptop is 1366 x 768, and has an HDMI port.

Can I attach an external monitor and get more resolution?

lol that I never found this site before

If you ever get infected with cryptolocker, you can get your files back without paying the ransom, more information at https://www.decryptcryptolocker.com/

Posting this here because I didn't want to clutter up the forum with a new thread, of which I'm sure there are dozens similar.

Looking for a new laptop, to replace my macbook pro which must be a good 5 years old. It's OK but doesn't run mega fast and has a persistent freezing problem (which I think may be bootcamp related)

Requirements:
- Be very strong for runnng poker and HEM with a fairly large DB, although I have PC set up for my day-to-day use
- No gaming whatsoever
- Be able to run monitors connected seamlessly, not sure how many is feasible, the more the better though.
- 15 or 17 inch
- Reliability is pretty key

Can you give me an idea what spec I should look for, or suggest models please? Fwiw I am UK based. I read that Lenovo's are poorly built but Dell XPS quite good. No idea how true that is.

Thanks in advance

ThinkPads are supposed to be good.

What's your budget?

No budget really, but it's not like I'd be using the laptop daily. I have a PC set up with 3 monitors, so this is mostly for travelling etc.

Can anyone help me with my post 3 up? Don't make me create a whole new thread!

The optimal setup would be a quad core CPU, 8GB RAM, a dedicated GPU, and an SSD. Some people get by with a dual core with integrated graphics and a 5400rpm HDD though. Your exact hardware requirements depend on what "running poker" actually means (few tables on PS vs massgrinding multiple sites with ****ty software, etc), and how many and what kind of monitors (hi-res vs 1080p) you actually want to plug.

I have no clue about quality and reliability differencies between brands, but Amazon reviews for instance are a great ressource.

Thanks for the post, very helpful.

I think I would 'occasionally' like to use either a 30" Dell monitor at top res, or maybe just a 20" at like 1900x1200. Anything I would need specifically for either of these?
01-23-2015 , 12:21 PM
For 1920*1200, HDMI is fine, anything above that requires (mini)DisplayPort or dual link DVI, the former being more common with laptops I think. From what I read there shouldn't be any issues running a single hi-res monitor in 2D mode off integrated graphics, but for more than one monitor or 3D stuff, a dedicated GPU is certainly the way to go.

Disclaimer: I have no first hand experience with modern laptops, all my knowledge comes from reading comments and reviews.

Also fwiw, afaik you won't find 1200p panels other than 24".

Microsoft's new browser sounds a bit... spartan.
