Thoughts in general on these two monitors? And anything better/comparable?

And what is the refresh rate on both anyone know?

Cheers Josem, will check Graphics card later.

Just realised I was being a ****** though, I actually have the Dell 3008wfp, and have seen the 3007wfp-HC for sale at a good price, thinking it was the same 3008. So maybe not such a good deal afterall!

Can you tell me the difference between the 3007 and 3008 range?
06-19-2013 , 08:46 AM
If you're using them to play poker, you're unlikely to notice the difference.

Certainly, I'd recommend getting whichever one is cheaper.

If you've got some specific needs, there might be some differences... but if that's the case, you're going to go know the difference anyway.

Some description of the differences are here: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=138271

Hey folks,

I often travel with three USB devices: phone x2, and an Android tablet.

I'd like a charger that can charge at least three devices simultaneously, with every USB socket simultaneously delivering 2.1a.

Since I travel between Australia, Europe, UK and rarely to North America, I'm comfortable with any plugs... I'll have to take an adaptor anyway. Any recommendations?

1GB AMD RADEON™ HD6870 - 2 DVI,HDMI,2 mDP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 4 Capable

OK this is the graphics card on my PC.

Right now I am running 2 20's with a DVI's and a 3008wfp with a minidisplay port. I wanna swap one of the 20's for another 3008wfp, or just even add the extra 30 so I'd have 4 monitors.

Am I good to go? Presumably connect the 2nd 30" with another MDP?

Thx in advance
07-17-2013 , 06:16 PM
FionnMac,

That will happily drive three monitors.

MDP will work perfectly (just as DVI will work fine if you use a full DVI cable like the one that will come with the monitor... many "normal" DVI cables won't suffice)
07-18-2013 , 04:11 PM
Thanks mate.

Just to be clear - I am running 3 monitors right now already but would like switch a 20" (DVI) with a 30" (MDP) or even have the option of running 4 monitors ideally (lol)

So a 2nd MDP connection with the 2nd 30" and I'm good to go? Both DVI's are used up with the 20's

I don't think that you will have any trouble running three monitors. I doubt four monitors will work. So go get your second thirty inch beast, plug it in, and if you can get all four to work, then you will be running hot.

hey guys need a recommendation on a new desktop, mine just finally gave out after 7 or 8 years, really thought it was going to go 10 or more.

I need it to be able to allow me to play poker, use pokertracker, and run other programs at the same time. (netflix streaming and such) I need to be able to plug in 4 monitors. Currently 2 have blue plugs and 2 have white plugs. Though all have the white option, should I get white cords? I need a new keyboard, mouse(I like standard mouse), and speakers.

Pricepoint is hard to say, I want something new and good but thought desktops were cheap these days and don't really know standard prices.

Also my old desktop is 32 pounds, are new desktops still this heavy? What do I do with an old desktop with a shot hard drive?

one more question, I have a monitor(dell 2001 fp) which has an ac adapter plug, can I buy a standard plugin for this somewhere?

and any suggestions on a decent surge protector?

thanks guys

Buy a new hard drive, install an OS, sell it.

On a 7- or 8-year-old computer it's probably not worth bothering with. Generally when I see someone ride out the same machine that long, they tend to be entry-level boxes to begin with. Even if you bought a high-end set up from that era like this $3,600 job circa 2004, it would hold virtually no resale value today. So the overwhelmingly likely answer to what you should do with it is just dispose of it. Maybe find a leftover IDE-style used hard drive and put an OS on it to give to a kid if you want.

The good news is that basically any off-the-shelf desktop will do what you want, you just might have to stick in a couple cheap video cards to run 4 displays. So something with two PCI-E ports internally would do the trick. Installing two simple video cards is pretty straightforward for a novice DIY'er, just need a phillips head screwdriver and the ability to slide a card into a slot.

What specific cards you'd want depends on the monitors' connectivity. If you're rocking 4 old school displays figure out if they have VGA or DVI connections or what. You can look those up and know the difference quickly. Fwiw, VGA is almost obsolete and DVI isn't that far behind, though still common presently. You can still find low-cost basic cards with what you need today. Given the choice, try to avoid using VGA connections if you can.

Overall there's been a ton of evolution in desktop PCs and displays since you last bought one, so there's a huge benefit to just replacing it. A $500 machine (tops) will generally come with a basic mouse and keyboard, and the added cards your 4 displays require might go another $80. If you were content with two monitors you wouldn't need even the cards in favor of just the built-in video.

Thanks for the info, it was actually a 2k computer back in the day, but I think desktops were more expensive at that point. trash sounds good. I got my moneys worth.

Is the surface tablet the only tablet that will allow me to play poker on?
07-23-2013 , 02:00 PM
Matt24,

You can run some poker sites (eg, PokerStars) on both Android and iOS tablets.

If you want to run the client and also HM/PT/etc. then (AFAIK) you'll need a Windows 8 tablet. The Surface Tablet is just one of a variety of different options.

why the hell does Windows 7 hate wifi so much!

the F do! I want to punch that Bill Gates guy right in the face.

I can't say that I have extensive experience with lots of different computers running Windows 7 and connecting wirelessly, but I have never once had an issue that was specific to Windows 7 and wifi.

Does anyone know of any really good youtube channels for things like computer and network security?

Sort of.

ProfessorMesser.com is probably what you want. Solid video courses for a bunch of things, including A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA. Free.

Sweet, will check it out. Thx man.

Been looking at laptops for gaming and came across the MSI G series. Torn between the GX and GE versions (amd is gx, intel/nvidia is ge). Some comparisons below. Top model in red and the one directly below it.

From this review.

This site doesn't make the differences seem too huge, but I'm still surprised the amd-version seems to outstrip the somewhat comparable intel/nvidia version. (edit - maybe it does, I never really compared the two benchmarks, lousy pita tablet that I'm on aorn)

There are newer versions with updated hardware now, but I'm a little paranoid that somehow the magic might have been lost and one of the new ones won't kick all the butt that that one specific model seemed to (which is why it got an editor's choice).

Thoughts?

Also, as I was removing Ubuntu from a pc I'm trying to sell, I happened across the way to make your pc use more than one CPU core while booting. I'm sure it's common knowledge around these parts, but wtf at that not being the default option for any multi-core CPU?
08-21-2013 , 06:13 AM
Maybe it's not common knowledge imo.

That explains why my laptop didn't seem to boot up any faster after I'd done it. I just thought it was because it was an i3 processor or something.

Also, what are the tweaks that do speed up boot time? Giz's laptop is way slow to boot.
08-22-2013 , 05:05 AM
New laptop here Friday, woo!

Gonna try to triple boot it with 8, 7, and Ubuntu. Petty sure I'll be tits up at least a few times this weekend.
