So I was having pop-ups regularly using firefox and tried McAfee, didn't help. So I did a little research and came across AdwCleaner. It's free and did the job and was very quick and easy to use. check it out at https://download.cnet.com/AdwCleaner...-75851221.html
Rather than relying solely on McAfee you'd do well to install Malwarebytes Antimalware for realtime protection. It can be used alongside an antivirus product (although there is some overlap). It's great. The premium version is to my mind worth it, although the free version is very good too (and I used it for years). The product page I linked about includes all of these in addition to AdwCleaner.
