Foxit reader is good and comes with plugins for Chrome and FF. They've recently added some crapware that you have to make sure you opt out of at install time.

I don't trust it, or Google.

Chrome is fast.

I am addicted to certain firefox extensions, though (eg, Foxclocks and Site Launcher) which are more valuable to me than Chrome speed.

Chrome is pretty good and it is fast. I do really like the way the tabs are all run in separate processes and displayed above the address bar.

Opera is my current favourite since it is also as fast or faster than Chrome and has a lot of functionality built into it (mouse gestures, ad blocking, password management etc). The next release is also going to include extensions similar to FF. The one issue with Opera is that there are a few (increasingly rare though) sites that don't render correctly.

I'm looking for something that will allow me to make to do lists with the ability to make things as complete (obviously) and also with the ability to have nested collapsible sub-tasks.

I did this before in either Word or OneNote several versions back but when I tried now I don't see it as an option and google searches claim it can't be done and outline mode is the closest to what I want.

Free is better since I can use it now without having to leave the house but pay is also fine.

The Mac world is full of these kinds of apps, so much so they have their own acronym: GTD for Get Things Done. That may be the way to search for them for Windows.

This looks like a place to start: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/tec...mac-linux.html

I've used Chandler before and liked it, now I use Things which is Mac specific unfortunately.

Bit unfair to mention GTD without crediting it properly - although the term is used for productivity in general, it stems from a book/system written by David Allen. Plenty of people swear by it. Never quite worked for me.

You're right - there are tons of apps out there and the productivity blogs are some of the best places to learn about them. Windows has just as much coverage as the Mac world, too - it's just that plenty of Web2.0 bloggers are Apple fanbois...

Good places to start probably include:

LifeHack
LifeHacker
Some of the blogs on the LifeRemix network
43 Folders
and
Zen Habits

This used to be a good list - I haven't looked at it for a while, though.

Henry - you might want to start by looking at the systems like RememberTheMilk - far more extensive than just making lists, but you might like the idea. There are a couple of apps out there that turn your to-do lists into a game, too. I keep meaning to try one but it's always too far down the list...

Is foobar still >>>> iTunes? Would I even need iTunes anymore if I never buy music/shows of it?

Thanks.

Yes; even Winamp is better than iTunes.

OK so I have never used a mini-laptop in this case a Dell Inspiron 1012.

Friend gave me it to have a look at, just to clean out and update etc...His AV was out of date so I installed Avira (Free) but it seems to have slowed up this laptop quite a bit. Is this normal for a laptop of this size or would there be any other problems?

Basically if Avira is the problem then what would be the best Free AV to install in this case?

The other AV is uninstalled right?

I'd try http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Yeah everything was uninstalled.

I uninstalled Avira and it seems to be running faster but I really cant understand why it would be that big of an issue, there is an update ready to install on the laptop and it appears to be that of the link above.

This. Is. Awesome. If you have a multi-computer set up...just...trust me.
I still shake my head at the fact that this is free.

An alternative for Video:
I cam across this as recommended in a windows 7 forum, i was looking for something to play older .3g2 files recorded on a Motorola cell phone that would not play audio in any other player or convert, i tried VLC:
Downloaded, dragged the file in and played, worked like a charm.
Its called SUPER
