One I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned, unless I've just missed it is Wireshark. Probably not a lot of use to those without a decent amount of networking knowledge (though definitely a good way to play around and learn some things), but in my mind its one of the top couple examples of just how useful and feature packed FOSS software can be. For those unfamiliar with it, its a sniffing/packet capture and analysis tool. I've used it for years and am still finding features all the time that make my job easier. One of the best troubleshooting tools out there and like I said its ability to follow individual flows and conversations and even reconstruct things like web page views and histories are a great way to help visualize and learn more about just whats going on when it comes to networking.

DblDown1766,
Your post hits on the two reason's it hadn't been mentioned yet. If you don't do networking, there is no reason to know it exists. Also, it is cross platform. So, while it is an awesome program, this thread is about Windows.

ottsville,
Handbrake won't break disc encryption, but I'll probably get yelled at if I tell you one that will. However, Handbrake is the go to for converting to video files.

Thanks for your candor Irish. It would be good to avoid mentioning things that we can't mention:
Torrents
Breaking DRM

Regardless if they can be used for good the Powers That Be have decided it isn't something we discuss on 2+2.

Thanks,
The Management

I was trying this out, and didn't mind having to pay a little since I hit the limit pretty quickly during testing. But it hung once and all the sync info was gone.

I looked around a bit more and found SyncBack (www.2BrightSparks.com), they have 3 different versions of Syncing software , the simplest of which is free. I liked interface better than allwaysync too, so I am using this for now.

The first post in this thread is about 2 years old so I was worried that the info might be outdated - which is the best free anti-spy/malware software available at the moment? I'm using ad-aware right now and somebody told me it wasn't all that good and that it didn't look for spyware, just malware, is that correct?

thx.

The best tool is malwarebytes anti-malware.

Ad-aware isn't very good. And fwiw, spyware is a type of malware.

VirtuaWin.

Absolutely perfect for laptop users. It gives you multiple desktops like in Linux. 1 you put your tables, 2 put you lobby, 3 your music and 4 you put what ever you like. Or if you need more? Can do!

In pages it tells that its ok with Vista, but with month experience Win7 x64. No problems.

Install the Xiph Quicktime component. This will allow iTunes to read FLAC files. You can then use iTunes to convert from FLAC to Apple Lossless.

+1 for Syncback. I have been using it at home and at work (they allow commercial) for quite a while now and absolutely love it. No issues.
