Been messing with Blender over the weekend, for 3D design, animation. Open source, looks like it can take on the $500 stuff in a serious way. Nice interface too. Relying on youtube vids to learn the basics.

Uninstalled AVG and tried Microsoft Security Essentials. Not for any real reason other than another PC-savvy friend of mine uses it and I've grown tiresome of AVG. I don't use much anti-virus or antimalware software as it is.

So far so good, at the very least it fixed a recent problem I had with not being able to VPN in from home to my office desktop.

MSE used to be the best choice but Microsoft stopped trying to keep it on the cutting edge and it has fallen significantly behind. Now, most recommend one of the other options over MSE. I personally switched to Bit Defender Free after using MSE for years.

I'm not sure MSE ever used to be the best choice - it's always been average at best, but it's certainly further behind the curve now than it used to be.

g-bebe: MSE does horribly in most independent tests of detection capability etc. There are FAR better free alternatives: try for example Bitdefender's free product.

Eh, in my opinion it was. It performed highest amongst the free choices, and certainly well enough to make it not worth it to pay. It also integrated perfectly into the operating system and was very light on resources and no headache at all. Far and away the best choice.

Not anymore, obviously.

Many thanks for this. My laptop, which had been running great for a couple of years, was suddenly all but worthless after a sudden malware invasion the other day. I tried, but failed, trying to fix it myself, so I came here, saw this post and figured I had nothing to lose. Tried Malwarebytes and it got everything back to normal in about an hour. Saved me from having to buy a new computer.

Stu, what antivirus product do you have installed? There may be more you can do to keep things optimal.

I thought of not making a new thread but ask this question here as its relevant, but is there a free program that finds/installs/updates my drivers and doesnt add any unwanted applications like most **** out there?

I am going to format my Acer S3 391-53314G12ADD
Now when im checking drivers from Acer website ... they are all from 2012 .....
When i log in from my Admin user account and try Acer updater ... says "your drivers are up to date" and update history has been empty forever ... maybe Windows update has taken care of everything???
Also when i try update driver from Device Manager ... everything seems to be "up to date", but googling returns other results

What is the best way to use this site on a PC with multiple user accounts?

I have a new workstation and I have 1 Admin account, my own personal account and 1 each for the children.

Should I go for an install from the Admin account, if so will all app installed be available to all users and if necessary I can remove those from the personal account which aren't necessary?

can anyone recommend the best non resourceful free virus software? i been told avira? i always used avast before

The "best" tends to be a matter of opinion. If you select something from BitDefender, Kaspersky, Avast or Avira you should be fine. They're all decent enough. Last time I read up on it I think one of the first two was the lightest in terms of resource use, but that was a while ago and these things vary (and depend on your own config to some extent).

No need to switch from Avast imo if you get on with it okay. On a modern machine AV resource use shouldn't really be causing serious issues - you probably have other concerns.
