If you just want to play music give foobar2000 a shot. It's extremely light weight and very customizable. I've been using it for like 8 years, it hasn't failed me once.

It's probably the most light weight mp3 player you can find that's fully featured and very flexible. It also opens remote locations so using it to listen to streams is no problem.

I have it open right now with 27 songs in a play list. It's using less than 4mb of ram while playing and it's not even touching the CPU load (my CPU is a C2D 6420e and is approaching 5 years old).

I'm having a party at the weekend and I am busy ripping all my CDs to MP3s.

I need a jukebox software app which anyone can use to add music to a playlist which will play via my laptop to an amp / speakers.

I guess what I want is a graphical display of my music library and an easy option to add to playlist.

Years ago I used Musicmatch with reasonable success.

I use VLC for MP3 playback these days but I don't think it's interface is good enough for non-techies to use.

Any suggestions?

Allowing party-goers to choose your music is a bad idea because they are **** at choosing good music.

Make your own playlist in foobar and hide the screen/controls.

No not the same software AFAIK but a good freebie which does the job just fine imo.

Uses quite a bit of HDD space, not sure I would want to record sessions with it (probably anything actually) tho.

For recording poker sessions you probably want a recorder which captures at 2 fps or something - not aware of anything that can do that....

the OP's out of date, but i'd remove references to avg and just leave up avast. after avg's latest changes on a friend's pc, which had embedded themselves so awkwardly into their system that it took me an hour to remove them, it can almost be classified as a virus in itself nowadays

You can select the compression codec, video quality, and the framerate to dramatically reduce this.

for people using foobar, when you import your songs, what file type does it convert to (if any). itunes convert to AAC (i believe), and im curious if foobar convert to a smaller file size, or will it allow me to upload more songs to an ipod.

tbh im not concerned with itunes being bloated, i have 8GB ram and everything runs very fast even with multiple processes/applications open. just want to be able to fit as much onto my ipod as possible (my 80gb is full so i just bought a 160gb and i could fill that with all different music not on the 80 and still have music not on either ipod)

With iTunes you can set it to import to mp3 at a custom bitrate.

I am addicted to surfing the web, opening programs (outlook, media player) when i am grinding

I got an add one for firefox and have the net under control, can any one tell me about a cheap or free program to deal with the programs for windows7 that i can program only to block during a certain time?

Great thread. Two things:

1. I downloaded JDownloader and my Aviva detects a Virus in the program. Can anyone confirm that it's safe?

2. Has anyone tried Dragon NaturallySpeaking? I know it's not free but I'm looking for feedback.
