Their free account does not even have SSL encryption for sending the data. That's a privilege only to paid accounts.

Why would even care about encryption of your family vacation shots?
All the garbage you leave on the web now will leave a trace. Companies are interested in finding patterns and links because marketing undergoes a change.
We don't know how privacy and the internet will work together in 50 years, so a little awareness about what is really a good service is and what not is probably a good idea in the long run.
